Joint Committee On Health: Services and Supports for People with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: Discussion (13 Jun 2023)

Mark Ward: I thank Dr. Morris. We were critical when we received the Mental Health Commission's recent report on CAMHS. In fairness, though, the Lucena CAMHS was top of the class in that report. Whatever it is doing, it needs to keep doing it. I have asked the HSE to examine that model and replicate it across other CAMHS areas. It is nice not to be critical constantly. I want to ask a question...

Joint Committee On Health: Services and Supports for People with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: Discussion (13 Jun 2023)

Mark Ward: I will touch on that because Mr. Kilbride mentioned money. This is my last question and I know I probably went on a bit. In his opening statement, Mr. Kilbride mentioned that young people with ADHD are twice as likely to come from socioeconomically disadvantaged areas. I wonder where he got that information from. What can be done to address that?

Joint Committee On Health: Services and Supports for People with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: Discussion (13 Jun 2023)

Mark Ward: Has there been any move to have additional resources specifically on this issue placed in schools in disadvantaged areas, such as DEIS schools?

Joint Committee On Health: Services and Supports for People with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: Discussion (13 Jun 2023)

Mark Ward: There is probably another debate on the changing demographics and what the DEIS scheme needs now because I think myself it should be extended to other areas. I thank the witnesses for all their interactions.

Ceisteanna ar Sonraíodh Uain Dóibh - Priority Questions: Mental Health Services (1 Jun 2023)

Mark Ward: During the meeting of the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Health of 24 May, Mr. Bernard Gloster, CEO of the HSE, stated in reply to me that the HSE had "a serious question to ask as to whether we continue to maintain more than 70 partially staffed [CAMHS] teams or reduce them to 55 or 50 full teams". Are there plans to reduce the number of child and adolescent mental health service teams from...

Ceisteanna ar Sonraíodh Uain Dóibh - Priority Questions: Mental Health Services (1 Jun 2023)

Mark Ward: I accept that, but we are getting mixed messages. For example, when Mr. Gloster said what he said at the health committee meeting, that was the first I had heard of it, although I had heard inklings on the grapevine. The Minister of State now indicated that the number of CAMHS teams might be reduced from 74 and that parents might be asked to drive a little further to get a full service but...

Ceisteanna ar Sonraíodh Uain Dóibh - Priority Questions: Mental Health Services (1 Jun 2023)

Mark Ward: The Minister of State rightly mentioned the increase in the number of CAMHS referrals, which amounted to more than 300,000 in the past year, according to what she told me the previous time we spoke.
