Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Hospital Staff Recruitment (9 Oct 2019)

Maria Byrne: I welcome the Minister of State. We have had debates on this issue in the past and he gave me a very promising answer, but I am very frustrated at this stage because it is my understanding that, despite funding having been sanctioned for a nursing position at least eight if not 12 months ago, progress has stalled. When I wrote to University Hospital Limerick to ask it to outline the...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Hospital Staff Recruitment (9 Oct 2019)

Maria Byrne: I thank the Minister of State for that offer because I raised this issue with Mr. Reid at the committee last week when we discussed MRI scanners and overcrowding. If a neurological clinical nurse specialist was put in place it would definitely help to reduce waiting lists. The more pressure we can put on Mr. Reid the better.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (9 Oct 2019)

The area also contains a number of nursing homes and a respite home, so there are a lot of very vulnerable...

Seanad: Free Education (Prohibition of Fees and Charges) Bill 2018: Committee Stage (9 Oct 2019)

Maria Byrne: The Minister is very welcome. I welcome the sentiments in the Bill and the fact that we are supporting it today. I have reservations about one or two aspects but I believe they could be ironed out. They concern extracurricular activities, such as school trips, or schemes such as the book rental scheme. Will these be affected, or will there be a way to work around the issues? Where there...

Maria Byrne: I joined a march in Limerick last Saturday attended by thousands of people protesting the decision of the Environmental Protection Agency, EPA, to grant a licence for the burning of rubber tyres and various other forms of rubbish in a cement kiln at the Irish Cement plant on Dock Road. There is grave concern among residents. There are schools and many older people in the affected community...

Seanad: Budget 2020: Statements (8 Oct 2019)

Maria Byrne: In the area of health, I welcome the €50 increase in the medical card threshold for the over-70s. People have been coming to me every week to tell me they have been caught by the threshold. The €150 per couple increase is also most welcome, as is free GP care for the under eights, dental care for the under sixes and a 50 cent reduction in prescription charges, which will help...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (3 Oct 2019)

Maria Byrne: Ireland certainly is being commended. Even after the match the other day, they stayed and clapped the Japanese. We are renowned for the way that we carry on when we are abroad, certainly, in terms of sport. The budget and Brexit are the other matters Senator Horkan raised, and how the Good Friday Agreement needs to be protected. We are all in support of that and all in agreement. The...
