- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Ireland's Water Quality: Discussion (5 Jul 2023)
Jackie Cahill: I will just make a few points before I go back to the witnesses to allow them to sum up. This report is going to be critical to this argument. "Argument" is probably the wrong word. It is a battle to save our derogation. The methodology the EPA has used to compile this report will have to be subject to some more scrutiny. I do not expect the officials to pass comment on this because it...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Ireland's Water Quality: Discussion (5 Jul 2023)
Jackie Cahill: We will suspend while we get ready for the second session. Mr. Callanan has asked that we take a proposal on the regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council on the sustainable use of plant protection products first as he will deal with that as well. If the committee is agreeable with that, we will take that first before we deal with forestry. Is that agreed? Agreed. It is to...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Sustainable Use of Plant Protection Products Regulation: Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (5 Jul 2023)
Jackie Cahill: I wish to bring it to the witnesses' attention that when giving evidence from within the parliamentary precincts they are protected by absolute privilege in respect of the evidence they give to the committee. This means that witnesses will have full defence in any defamation action arising from anything said at a committee meeting. However, witnesses are expected not to abuse this privilege...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Update on Ireland's Forestry Strategy: Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (5 Jul 2023)
Jackie Cahill: We will move on to the update on Ireland's forestry strategy. I call Mr. Fergus Moore.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Update on Ireland's Forestry Strategy: Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (5 Jul 2023)
Jackie Cahill: Before Mr. Dunne comes in, this CAP programme was delayed for two years. We were in limbo for two years. We were given assurances when this strategy went to Brussels that it would be brought back by return of post. That was 1 January. We are now in the first week in July. We have seen that more questions are being asked by the Commission. It was bad enough to have to wait until 1...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Update on Ireland's Forestry Strategy: Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (5 Jul 2023)
Jackie Cahill: I cannot believe what we are hearing here. We had two years to get ready to take this policy to Brussels and here we are, six months into it, dealing with issues that should have been dealt with two years ago. The forestry sector is on its knees. Contractors are looking in at this session to see if there is light at the end of the tunnel. Whatever hope they had is disappearing very fast.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Update on Ireland's Forestry Strategy: Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (5 Jul 2023)
Jackie Cahill: We are worse. To say we are appalled at what we are hearing is an understatement. This is unbelievable. We are going backwards at a rate of knots. As Deputy Fitzmaurice said, all of these issues should have been dealt with before this project went anywhere near Brussels.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Update on Ireland's Forestry Strategy: Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (5 Jul 2023)
Jackie Cahill: We are going to get very cross.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Update on Ireland's Forestry Strategy: Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (5 Jul 2023)
Jackie Cahill: I got five calls today from stakeholders in the forestry industry telling me to make sure I find out what date the forestry strategy will be accepted in Brussels. There are people whose livelihoods depend on this and some of them employ significant numbers of people. Given what the witnesses have said tonight, I will not even put the question because I know the answer will be even more...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Update on Ireland's Forestry Strategy: Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (5 Jul 2023)
Jackie Cahill: We were in the plant at the Murray Timber Group and saw the end product that came out of there and the benefit it brought to the economy. In as rural a place as you can get, 180 people were employed, with 250 other gaining secondary employment from it. Yet here we are and we are not going to plant timber. Senator Paul Daly or someone that day made the point that Murray’s will be...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Update on Ireland's Forestry Strategy: Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (5 Jul 2023)
Jackie Cahill: I ask the officials to let the Minister know in the morning very quickly that the committee is completely unhappy with the state of affairs, the level of information we are getting and the state of the forestry sector. This committee has devoted a serious amount of time to this sector. This is not a good evening for the sector. The next meeting of the committee will resume examination of...
