Departmental Expenditure. (9 Jul 2008)

Eamon Gilmore: In reply to Deputy Kenny, the Taoiseach said that the time of the communications unit is taken up with answering media queries and that there is an increased workload because of the increase in the volume of media queries. That sounds to me like public relations work.

Departmental Expenditure. (9 Jul 2008)

Eamon Gilmore: I thought that was what the communications unit was doing.

Public Service Pay. (9 Jul 2008)

Eamon Gilmore: Question 8: To ask the Taoiseach the estimated cost to his Department of the full implementation of the recommendations of the Review Body on Higher Remuneration in the Public Service; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19443/08]

Public Service Pay. (9 Jul 2008)

Eamon Gilmore: What parts of the recommendations of the review body have been implemented? As I understand it, pay increases were recommended for a range of senior public servants, including senior politicians, that is, Ministers and office holders, as well as judges, senior civil servants, chief executives of State bodies and county managers. Has any part of the review body recommendations been...

Public Service Pay. (9 Jul 2008)

Eamon Gilmore: I thought the decision made last year to defer was only in respect of the Government itself and that the civil servants and so on got it.

Public Service Pay. (9 Jul 2008)

Eamon Gilmore: I do not know if the Taoiseach has the figure with him but could he tell us the total cost of implementing the recommendations? How much of that has been committed to being implemented or to being paid and, therefore, what is the annual saving as a result of yesterday's decision?

Death of Member: Expressions of Sympathy (9 Jul 2008)

Eamon Gilmore: Ba mhaith liom cur leis na focail atá ráite ag an Taoiseach agus an Teachta Kenny ar an lá brónach seo, lá bháis Séamus Brennan. Ba mhaith liom comhbhrón thar mo cheann féin agus thar cheann Pháirtí an Lucht Oibre a ghabháil le Ann Brennan, lena clann agus le comghleacaithe Shéamuis i Fianna Fáil agus sa Rialtas. Today is a sad day for all of us, but particularly for the...

Eamon Gilmore: Question 107: To ask the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform his views on the findings of the survey carried out for the National Advisory Committee on Drugs which found that the number of people using cocaine had more than doubled in most parts of the country between 2003 and 2007; the steps being taken to stop the flow of cocaine into Ireland; and if he will make a statement on...

[27100/08]

Departmental Staff. (8 Jul 2008)

Eamon Gilmore: The bottom line appears to be that, whatever the Government decided today with regard to limitations on staffing in the public sector, it does not apply to the Taoiseach's office, Ministers' offices, political advisers and the whole array of political staff employed by the Taoiseach and his Ministers.

Cabinet Committees. (8 Jul 2008)

Eamon Gilmore: Question 4: To ask the Taoiseach if he has plans for changes to the Cabinet sub-committees operating under the auspices of his Department [14627/08]

Cabinet Committees. (8 Jul 2008)

Eamon Gilmore: I want to ask the Taoiseach specifically about the Cabinet sub-committee on infrastructure. Has the Government decided to drop or defer the metro north project and, if so, will the Cabinet sub-committee on infrastructure deal with that Government decision?

Cabinet Committees. (8 Jul 2008)

Eamon Gilmore: I thank the Taoiseach for telling the House the metro north project is going ahead as planned. That is what I understood from his answer and if he wants to correct that, I am happy to hear what he has to say. Will the Cabinet sub-committee on infrastructure be asked to consider any other changes to the infrastructure programme arising from the decisions made at today's Cabinet meeting?

Leaders' Questions (8 Jul 2008)

Eamon Gilmore: I watched the Taoiseach and the Minister for Finance deliver their press conference on the Internet. I saw them answer the questions posed by journalists and I looked through their statement. Whatever this is, it is not a plan for the economy. It is a back of the envelope book-keeping exercise. It contains a few prudent measures, some of which had been sought for some time from this side...

Leaders' Questions (8 Jul 2008)

Eamon Gilmore: I am somewhat surprised at the figure the Taoiseach has just given us for his estimate of the amount that would be saved by a 3% payroll reduction across Departments, State agencies and local authorities. The Taoiseach has advised that would come to €250 million.

Leaders' Questions (8 Jul 2008)

Eamon Gilmore: Is the Taoiseach referring to the period between now and the end of 2009?

Leaders' Questions (8 Jul 2008)

Eamon Gilmore: These figures do not add up.

Leaders' Questions (8 Jul 2008)

Eamon Gilmore: The Taoiseach has told us the Government would save €1 billion in 2009. If the 3% payroll reduction only comes to €250 million between now and the end of 2009, where on earth is the €750 million for the remainder of 2009 and the remainder of the €190 million for 2008 to come from? That does not stack up. Even at the rate the Government is placing advertisements with television...
