Committee on Public Petitions: Campaign for a Walking and Cycling Greenway on the Closed Railway from Sligo to Athenry: Discussion (Resumed) (11 Apr 2024)

Rose Conway-Walsh: I thank the Cathaoirleach for the opportunity to speak. I welcome my Mayo colleagues and also Mr. Kenny. I do not believe we are here to second guess the mandate that has been given to the councillors on Mayo County Council, particularly with regard to the western rail corridor. It means an awful lot to the people of County Mayo and has done for many years now. I hear what the witnesses...

Committee on Public Petitions: Campaign for a Walking and Cycling Greenway on the Closed Railway from Sligo to Athenry: Discussion (Resumed) (11 Apr 2024)

Rose Conway-Walsh: Yes. That is really good. How much would it take in the interim to preserve the rail track as it is and keep it in good shape until such time as that money would be front-loaded to do that?

Committee on Public Petitions: Campaign for a Walking and Cycling Greenway on the Closed Railway from Sligo to Athenry: Discussion (Resumed) (11 Apr 2024)

Rose Conway-Walsh: My next question is for Mayo County Council around investment decisions. If the decision was to be made politically in the short and the medium term to continue that line, would Mayo County Council be supportive of that?

Committee on Public Petitions: Campaign for a Walking and Cycling Greenway on the Closed Railway from Sligo to Athenry: Discussion (Resumed) (11 Apr 2024)

Rose Conway-Walsh: If the investment was there tomorrow morning and if the investment decision was made. For example, if we have an €8.5 billion surplus this year and we were looking to put it into the funds for future investment and that investment was to be to be made in the whole of the line, would Mayo County Council support that?

Committee on Public Petitions: Campaign for a Walking and Cycling Greenway on the Closed Railway from Sligo to Athenry: Discussion (Resumed) (11 Apr 2024)

Rose Conway-Walsh: If something is not in the national rail review as it is now, would that be an impediment to this being done were the decision to be made? Are we confined, constrained or constricted in any way in developing the full line just because it is not in the rail review?

Committee on Public Petitions: Campaign for a Walking and Cycling Greenway on the Closed Railway from Sligo to Athenry: Discussion (Resumed) (11 Apr 2024)

Rose Conway-Walsh: Particularly if we had the political will on both sides of the island and we had the connectivity North and South to bring the railway line up along the whole of the western seaboard. Those are all my questions. It is quite obvious that we can have a greenway parallel to a railway line. It is absolutely imperative and I would not be doing my job here today if I did not stand up and...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: Legacy Issues: Discussion (11 Apr 2024)

Rose Conway-Walsh: Yes. Mr. Hazzard has already spoken, so many of the questions have been answered. I welcome the witnesses and thank him for their contribution this morning. From the start, the committee has taken a strategic and focused approach to the legacy Act and its implications. The Acting Chair will concur that while there are many things on which members of the committee from different parties do...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: Legacy Issues: Discussion (11 Apr 2024)

Rose Conway-Walsh: I thank Mr. Farrell for that. I also acknowledge the resilience of all of the families. This would not be happening were it not for the steadfast resilience shown by Mr. McCord's family and all the other families. Mr. McCord referred to a document in the court in Belfast. How confident is he of getting that document? Why are such efforts being made to conceal that document from him?...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: Legacy Issues: Discussion (11 Apr 2024)

Rose Conway-Walsh: That is fine. Do Mr. Farrell and Mr. McCord wish to add anything that could help the committee's work? I assure them that we will stay focused on what we need to do to support Mr. McCord and all of the families.

Committee on Public Petitions: Campaign for a Walking and Cycling Greenway on the Closed Railway from Sligo to Athenry: Discussion (Resumed) (11 Apr 2024)

Rose Conway-Walsh: So once the land is protected there is no benefit to having a greenway there beforehand or afterwards. We then must put in the infrastructure along the line to make it happen. Is that the case?

Future Ireland Fund and Infrastructure, Climate and Nature Fund Bill 2024: Second Stage (10 Apr 2024)

Rose Conway-Walsh: Let me be clear, Sinn Féin supports the setting up of a sovereign wealth fund. Long-term strategic planning of our public finances across the island is at the core of our vision for a new and united Ireland. There is widespread agreement that windfall corporation tax should not be spent on current expenditure. The unreliable nature of corporation tax means that is the prudent thing to...
