Joint Committee On Children, Equality, Disability, Integration And Youth: Possible Enhancement of Child Protection Powers of Tusla: Discussion (25 Apr 2023)

Lynn Ruane: For clarification, I will return to no current risk. Let us forget the organisation for a moment but recognise that there are still potentially some members within the organisation and in power and decision-making roles who it is alleged may have covered up. They were very aware of and sang songs about it. There were all these different statements in the report. Are they not a current...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (19 Apr 2023)

Lynn Ruane: I am asking for potential statements, maybe before the summer, on the use of AI in Ireland. I cannot speak for others but it causes me a high level if anxiety because no matter how much I read and try to understand it, I find it hard to grasp and grab. As legislators, we need to start creating space for conversations about it. We cannot only have conversations when legislation is coming...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (19 Apr 2023)

Lynn Ruane: Thank you.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (19 Apr 2023)

Lynn Ruane: I second the proposal.

Seanad: Historic and Archaeological Heritage Bill 2023: Report Stage (Resumed) and Final Stage (18 Apr 2023)

Lynn Ruane: I second the amendment.

Joint Committee On Children, Equality, Disability, Integration And Youth: Youth Work: Discussion (18 Apr 2023)

Lynn Ruane: I thank everyone for their presentations. It is a nice addition to the last session, which focused heavily on the principles of youth work and what youth work is. Today's session focuses on why we have not been able to concentrate on actual youth work. We found ourselves, for example, talking about food. That is not really a discussion about what youth work is. However, the need is...

Joint Committee On Children, Equality, Disability, Integration And Youth: Youth Work: Discussion (18 Apr 2023)

Lynn Ruane: I have one or two small points but only if Ms Cunningham is finished.

Joint Committee On Children, Equality, Disability, Integration And Youth: Youth Work: Discussion (18 Apr 2023)

Lynn Ruane: First, I would like to pick back up on the Garda vetting piece that was previously mentioned. Although I fully support Garda vetting, it is a little unfair to say that if someone is worried about Garda vetting they are probably not suited. People are worried because they have to divulge particular aspects of their lives to a potential employer but they may be completely irrelevant to the...

Joint Committee On Children, Equality, Disability, Integration And Youth: Youth Work: Discussion (18 Apr 2023)

Lynn Ruane: Discretion - exactly.

Joint Committee On Children, Equality, Disability, Integration And Youth: Youth Work: Discussion (18 Apr 2023)

Lynn Ruane: I know. It was just to clarify.

Joint Committee On Children, Equality, Disability, Integration And Youth: Youth Work: Discussion (18 Apr 2023)

Lynn Ruane: We just need to communicate that more across different sectors. Drug possession is in the same category as murder, rape and sexual assault so when it comes back on the Garda vetting, sometimes people just look at the category it is captured in. Having been in possession of €20 worth of cannabis in the 1990s could all of a sudden prohibit someone from a job later in life because it is...

Seanad: Independent Review of the Handling of Past Complaints of Abuse in St John Ambulance Ireland: Motion (29 Mar 2023)

Lynn Ruane: I thank the Minister for being in the Chamber. I rise in support of this motion. I thank the Fine Gael Senators, including Senators Seery Kearney and Doherty, for introducing it to the Chamber for debate this afternoon. I will begin by commending Mick Finnegan, Paul Mulholland, Martin Hoey, Mark Pender and the other victims and survivors of the abuse that was perpetrated within St. John...

Seanad: Historic and Archaeological Heritage Bill 2023: Report Stage (Resumed) (28 Mar 2023)

Lynn Ruane: I second the amendment.

Joint Committee On Children, Equality, Disability, Integration And Youth: Youth Work and Integrated Care and Education: Discussion (21 Mar 2023)

Lynn Ruane: I thank the witnesses for their presentations. I am a big believer that we need to take conversations in here right down to that, so whether it involves community work or whatever the sector is, it needs to have insight into what is happening on the ground. Today's presentations are as close to the ground as possible in the absence of young people themselves. I was happy to see the themes...

Joint Committee On Children, Equality, Disability, Integration And Youth: Youth Work and Integrated Care and Education: Discussion (21 Mar 2023)

Lynn Ruane: I thank Mr. Perth. Can I continue, particularly as there are only two of us?

Joint Committee On Children, Equality, Disability, Integration And Youth: Youth Work and Integrated Care and Education: Discussion (21 Mar 2023)

Lynn Ruane: Grand. I was looking at the clock going around and thinking that I would ignore it.

Joint Committee On Children, Equality, Disability, Integration And Youth: Youth Work and Integrated Care and Education: Discussion (21 Mar 2023)

Lynn Ruane: In looking at the societal issues, I will turn to Mr. Roe. Regarding investing in youth work, it can be seen from the work of this committee and the Minister's portfolio that there are many things to contend with in this context. It feels like the topic of youth work has not had any airing in terms of focus. I refer not only to investment but also to focused conversation in the context of...

Joint Committee On Children, Equality, Disability, Integration And Youth: Youth Work and Integrated Care and Education: Discussion (21 Mar 2023)

Lynn Ruane: I think the value-for-money conversation is an important one that we are not having. Someone touched on it in the context of predetermined outcomes. It may have been in Mr. Roe's submission.

Joint Committee On Children, Equality, Disability, Integration And Youth: Youth Work and Integrated Care and Education: Discussion (21 Mar 2023)

Lynn Ruane: I refer to the idea of the neoliberal market language being placed on something that cannot be measured in those terms.

Joint Committee On Children, Equality, Disability, Integration And Youth: Youth Work and Integrated Care and Education: Discussion (21 Mar 2023)

Lynn Ruane: Youth work cannot be measured in those same ways. It is the same with community and addiction work. As well as being able to challenge the investment made in youth work and how young people are being treated, there must also be a real conversation about the structures the State is imposing in respect of how we speak about this work in the first place.
