Seanad: Order of Business (25 Jan 2018)

Máire Devine: I echo Senator Ruane's sentiments. Home ownership is way out of reach for the next generation and the three possibilities for gaining money are also out of reach. Yesterday, my party colleagues, Deputy Louise O'Reilly and Orla Flynn, MLA, hosted a briefing on the transvaginal mesh and the stories of the brave warriors, mesh survivors, were truly shocking. This device has been recognised in...

I hope we can use this time to get detailed feedback on the progress of a Healthy Weight for Ireland plan and other initiatives that aim to tackle the issues raised in the report. I commend the work of the committee on this report and I agree with very many of the...

Máire Devine: -----and prenatal and postnatal care. Perhaps that will be part of further discussions down the line on sexual and reproductive health for women and girls in this country. I request that young mothers and young people continue to be involved. Young people need to be given a prominent role in the consultation and decisions that have yet to be made to become healthier, stronger and happier.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Future of Mental Health Care: Community Health Care Organisations: Discussion (Resumed) (24 Jan 2018)

Máire Devine: I am usually brief but do not quote me on that. In the interests of brevity, I will only ask questions, although I can make statements. I thank Mr. Walsh and Dr. McCormack for their briefings on CHO 7. The Chairman will discuss the issue of money, as not being able to discover what the budget is has got us around this table numerous times. I will ask different questions. Some are...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Future of Mental Health Care: Community Health Care Organisations: Discussion (Resumed) (24 Jan 2018)

Máire Devine: They are more comments than anything. The Dublin weighting is probably a problem. We have been pushing it as a union for a long time but the Minister for Finance is not listening to us very well. Tony O'Brien's yellow pack graduate nurses and his quote "we forced them out" are significant. They never got over it because he never apologised for that. In respect of getting generic training...

Seanad: National Minimum Wage (Protection of Employee Tips) Bill 2017: Second Stage (24 Jan 2018)

Máire Devine: I welcome Senator Paul Gavan's Bill, ably helped by Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh. I want the House to recognise that it would be a stand-alone Bill. If there are concerns about unintended consequences such as those we have heard from different sides, I ask that it be allowed go to Committee Stage where the issues can be argued out. That is what these Houses are for, not to shut down...
