- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Challenges Facing Emergency Departments in Public Hospitals: HSE (17 Jan 2023)
Martin Conway: Is that not the problem? Is the lack of a private hospital and the lack of an elective hospital in Limerick the nub of the problem? Is it not one of the key capacity problems in Limerick?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Challenges Facing Emergency Departments in Public Hospitals: HSE (17 Jan 2023)
Martin Conway: To be honest, what this is about is the HSE planning and preparing as best it can to deal with an emergency. It is scandalous that only five private beds were requisitioned by the UL Hospitals Group given that it is the worst performing hospital in the country. Would Mr. Mulvany not agree with that?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Challenges Facing Emergency Departments in Public Hospitals: HSE (17 Jan 2023)
Martin Conway: Why not?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Challenges Facing Emergency Departments in Public Hospitals: HSE (17 Jan 2023)
Martin Conway: Has the HSE put in place new protocols in terms of engagement with private hospital groups?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Challenges Facing Emergency Departments in Public Hospitals: HSE (17 Jan 2023)
Martin Conway: This is an emergency. The situation is extremely serious, which is why we are meeting here today. Can Mr. Mulvany confirm that nobody has lost his or her life as a result of this trolley-emergency department emergency? Have we ended up losing people because of what has happened?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Challenges Facing Emergency Departments in Public Hospitals: HSE (17 Jan 2023)
Martin Conway: The Chairman's examples sum up and amplify what we are all hearing throughout the country. I know people are doing their best, which must be acknowledged, but there is always room for improvement. I am sure Mr. Mulvany would acknowledge that. I would like Mr. Mulvany to respond directly to what Martin Curley, who has stepped down from the digital transformation programme, has said and put...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Challenges Facing Emergency Departments in Public Hospitals: HSE (17 Jan 2023)
Martin Conway: It is more about the issues he spoke about than him stepping down per se.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Challenges Facing Emergency Departments in Public Hospitals: HSE (17 Jan 2023)
Martin Conway: That is fine. It is good to see Dr. Henry. Will Dr. Henry give the committee an update on where we are with vaccinations for healthcare workers? If everyone in the population got their vaccines it might reduce the pressures on emergency departments. Will Dr. Henry also give the committee some information about Covid-19 vaccines? How is the latest National Immunisation Advisory...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Challenges Facing Emergency Departments in Public Hospitals: HSE (17 Jan 2023)
Martin Conway: That is great. I presume Dr. Henry might share my frustration and that of others with the slowness of NIAC's advice. Perhaps it is understaffed. If something will happen, NIAC ought to get on with it; it has been slow to react. How much waste has there been in Covid-19 vaccines that have gone out of date? How many vaccines have we needed to discard because they passed their expiry...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Challenges Facing Emergency Departments in Public Hospitals: HSE (17 Jan 2023)
Martin Conway: That is fine.
- Seanad: Election of Cathaoirleach (16 Dec 2022)
Martin Conway: It is with a huge sense of pride and joy that I address Senator Buttimer as Cathaoirleach. It is an enormous pleasure for me to do that as he is one of my closest friends, not just politically but in life. He is somebody I speak to every day of the week irrespective of whether it is good or bad. If anyone wonders about his passion, and many people have spoken about passion, they would not...
- Seanad: Election of Leas-Chathaoirleach (16 Dec 2022)
Martin Conway: Like everyone else, I commend our colleague, Senator Joe O’Reilly, on his fantastic two years as Leas-Chathaoirleach. He was very fair in his role. His office is across the corridor from mine, so I regularly engage with him and Mary O’Connor. He, too, has huge literary knowledge and a phenomenal command of the English language, in terms of his speaking ability and...
- Seanad: Election of Leas-Chathaoirleach (16 Dec 2022)
Martin Conway: An-mhaith, a chara, an-mhaith. He is pleasure to know. I have known Senator Joe O’Reilly since I was in Young Fine Gael a long time ago. I remember when he ran for the European elections in, I believe, 2009. We had great fun at the time. His work in the Council of Europe is very impressive. As regards Senator Daly, Mark is Mark. He pushed the boundaries beyond everyone’s...
- Seanad: Local Government (Maternity Protection and Other Measures for Members of Local Authorities) Bill 2022: Second and Subsequent Stages (15 Dec 2022)
Martin Conway: I also welcome this piece of legislation. I agree with Senator Boyhan and others that a lot has been achieved in the past two years. Sadly, very little was achieved in previous years so he was starting from a very low base, but this is very welcome, as are the other measures. I support Senator Moynihan's view that we need a much broader debate on maternity leave across the public sector,...
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (15 Dec 2022)
Martin Conway: It is a very sad day, as most speakers have mentioned. Private Seán Rooney has lost his life in the line of duty. We salute what he has achieved and we mourn with his family as a nation. We also wish Private Shane Kearney well on his road to recovery. Please God, his recovery will happen and will be swift. Like others, I commend the Cathaoirleach. As I have told him privately on a...
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (14 Dec 2022)
Martin Conway: Like other colleagues, I commend our colleague, Senator Mary Seery Kearney, on a remarkable achievement in 24 months. We all know how slow Government can be in getting things over the line. This was done relatively quickly when one considers the challenges and difficulties and the fact that a committee was set up. It is great that it has happened. Well done to Senator Seery Kearney. I...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Recruitment, Retention and Manpower Planning Issues: Irish College of General Practitioners (14 Dec 2022)
Martin Conway: I thank the witnesses for their attendance. This has been a useful engagement. Deputy Burke asked about the task force and the terms of reference. Have the witnesses been given sight of draft terms of reference for the group that will be convened in January?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Recruitment, Retention and Manpower Planning Issues: Irish College of General Practitioners (14 Dec 2022)
Martin Conway: Has the ICGP been given an indication as to who will chair the task force?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Recruitment, Retention and Manpower Planning Issues: Irish College of General Practitioners (14 Dec 2022)
Martin Conway: Do the witnesses have any preference?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Recruitment, Retention and Manpower Planning Issues: Irish College of General Practitioners (14 Dec 2022)
Martin Conway: With regard to GP visit cards specifically, the departmental and Government target is that there would be free GP access for children aged six and seven by the end of this year and that next April, there will be further changes to the qualification criteria. Given the pressure that GPs are under, do the witnesses think it is wise for the Government to proceed with the changes in April?
