Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Third Report of the Citizens' Assembly: Climate Change Advisory Council (12 Sep 2018)

Pat Deering: I apologise for arriving late. I will speak on the agricultural theme. My first question is for Ms Burke. Is there less livestock in the country today than was the case 20 years ago?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Third Report of the Citizens' Assembly: Climate Change Advisory Council (12 Sep 2018)

Pat Deering: My understanding is that this is the situation, which would defeat the argument Ms Burke has made. From listening to Professor FitzGerald in particular, the communication strategy on this is essential. We are creating a rural-urban divide, which I can see increasing. The agricultural sector is our largest indigenous industry and it gives employment to approximately 300,000 people....

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Third Report of the Citizens' Assembly: Climate Change Advisory Council (12 Sep 2018)

Pat Deering: Does Ms Burke have a breakdown of that data by area?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Third Report of the Citizens' Assembly: Discussion (5 Sep 2018)

Pat Deering: I welcome Ms Justice Laffoy and thank her for her contribution to society in different areas. I have some brief questions to follow up on Senator Daly's question on the agriculture sector. Ms Justice Laffoy made the point earlier that Professor Alan Matthews was the main contributor to the agricultural module, if I can so describe it.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Third Report of the Citizens' Assembly: Discussion (5 Sep 2018)

Pat Deering: Was much consideration given to how we can balance the equation with the Food Harvest 2020 and Food Wise 2025 targets that were set by the agriculture industry in Ireland over the last number of years whereby there has been a large increase in production and targets? For example, there will be an increase of up to 80% in production in the dairy sector and a 50% increase in production in the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Third Report of the Citizens' Assembly: Discussion (5 Sep 2018)

Pat Deering: Suckler farming is mainly confined to the west of Ireland. We have seen reports in the media recently about the decimation of rural Ireland with regard to post offices, school transport and so forth, so this would result in a closing down of certain parts of rural Ireland. Was much consideration given to that recommendation as well?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Fodder Shortages and Drought Issues: Discussion (4 Sep 2018)

Pat Deering: I welcome everyone to the meeting. Apologies have been received from Deputy Marcella Corcoran Kennedy and Senator Tim Lombard. I remind members, witnesses and those in the Public Gallery to ensure that mobile phones are turned off. Today's meeting is being held to discuss issues concerning the ongoing fodder shortages and the drought issues being experienced in farming communities in...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Fodder Shortages and Drought Issues: Discussion (4 Sep 2018)

Pat Deering: I thank the Deputy. Before we go back to the Minister and to the other members, I have a couple of questions I would like to put to him. I was neither horrified nor surprised when I read in the Farming Independentthis morning that County Carlow is the driest county in the country at the moment. Myself and Deputy Cahill are arguably in the eye of the storm. The south east is the area where...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Fodder Shortages and Drought Issues: Discussion (4 Sep 2018)

Pat Deering: I thank the Minister. Deputy McConalogue is next, followed by Senators Paul Daly and Mulherin.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Fodder Shortages and Drought Issues: Discussion (4 Sep 2018)

Pat Deering: Before I move on to the next speaker, I note the potential cost of whatever product is being imported. Obviously, we were traditionally dependent on our nearest neighbour for imports but the fact that they will now come from further afield will, I presume, involve an extra cost. Is there any indication of that cost at this stage?
