Jan O'Sullivan: I have a procedural point. We need to have consistent language in the various recommendations. In the decriminalisation section, there is probably better language in respect of clinical and medical guidelines and so on. In writing the report, we should use the same language in each section.

Jan O'Sullivan: No, Chair. I do not understand what we are voting on. I have two copies of the recommendations by the Citizens' Assembly and there is no reference to a reason 13. I can see the words "socio-economic reasons" and there is nothing after that.

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Local Government (Establishment of Town Councils Commission) Bill 2017: Discussion (13 Dec 2017)
Jan O'Sullivan: I am not a member of the committee but I am thankful for the opportunity to speak. I support the proposal by Deputy Cassells. The Labour Party was in government at the time and it was a mistake to abolish town councils. We acknowledge in our party that it was a mistake. However, they do need to be reformed. That is the main point I wish to make. Some very small places had town councils...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Local Government (Establishment of Town Councils Commission) Bill 2017: Discussion (13 Dec 2017)
Jan O'Sullivan: I thank Mr. Lemass for his presentation. It is important that we look at the questions asked. One proposal that might cause us all concern, if it were to be a problem, is the current commitment to reduce the size of local electoral areas. It is being considered and it is being suggested that if this proposal went ahead, it would delay that process and it would not be possible to do it in...

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Local Government (Establishment of Town Councils Commission) Bill 2017: Discussion (13 Dec 2017)

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Local Government (Establishment of Town Councils Commission) Bill 2017: Discussion (13 Dec 2017)
Jan O'Sullivan: Yes, but that does not necessarily mean that the new system is the right model either. Just because Limerick did not happen to have such councils before does not mean that the right thing to do now is to keep the municipal districts.
- Written Answers — Department of Justice and Equality: Family Reunification Policy (13 Dec 2017)
Jan O'Sullivan: 135. To ask the Tánaiste and Minister for Justice and Equality the details of the proposal to support family reunification for 500 Syrian families that have fled the conflict there; if it will include Syrian families currently in the EU that have a spouse or parent that is not Syrian; and if he will make a statement on the matter. - Electoral (Amendment) (Dáil Constituencies) Bill 2017: Committee and Remaining Stages (12 Dec 2017)
Jan O'Sullivan: I move amendment No. 5: In page 14, to delete line 32 and substitute the following: " Louth and East Meath The county of Louth; Five ".I will not be pressing the amendment but I want to make a case, which is being supported by Deputy Breathnach. I am not hung up on the wording but with 22,000 people affected, it is a different constituency from the others like my own where there are...
