- Seanad: Kidnapping of Irish Citizen: Motion. (21 Oct 2004)
Mary Henry: I propose to share my time with Senators Ross and Norris. I welcome the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Deputy Dermot Ahern, and support this motion, which is broad and generous, involving a Government commitment to contribute in any way possible to secure the release of Mrs. Hassan. From what we have heard of Mrs. Hassan, it is clear she would like us to emphasise that we are not just calling...
- Seanad: Medical Cards: Motion (13 Oct 2004)
Mary Henry: I welcome the Minister of State, Deputy Seán Power, and look forward to seeing a lot of him in the House because I have found him a good person to work with. I find the amendment to this motion very depressing because while we all know there has been terrific economic growth in this country over the past ten years and that there has been a huge investment in the health service, the paper...
- Seanad: Intoxicating Liquor Bill 2004: Committee and Remaining Stages. (13 Oct 2004)
Mary Henry: Or water.
- Seanad: Intoxicating Liquor Bill 2004: Committee and Remaining Stages. (13 Oct 2004)
Mary Henry: I thank the Minister for his reply. Whenever I have asked for a glass of water in a pub, I have received it with ice and often a slice of lemon at no charge at all. Under health legislation, the Minister is right that they were quite wrong at that time to turn off the water at hand basins in the lavatories.
- Seanad: Intoxicating Liquor Bill 2004: Committee and Remaining Stages. (13 Oct 2004)
Mary Henry: I congratulate the Minister on the Bill. When the junior certificate results were issued, it was terribly disappointing that those who tried to organise alcohol-free discos where children could celebrate ran into trouble. I am glad the Minister has clarified the situation for such people.
- Seanad: Intoxicating Liquor Bill 2004: Second Stage (Resumed). (13 Oct 2004)
Mary Henry: I wish to share my time with Senator Quinn, two minutes for me and the rest for him. I welcome the Minister to the House. Some Senators said this Bill would not be before the House today if common sense had been applied to the main piece of legislation. However, since the clarification was sought by the Director of Public Prosecutions, who is a constituent of mine, I do not believe I will get...
- Seanad: Intoxicating Liquor Bill 2004: Second Stage (Resumed). (13 Oct 2004)
Mary Henry: Can I ask the Minister about tap water?
- Seanad: Order of Business. (13 Oct 2004)
Mary Henry: When the Government was seeking election to a seat on the UN Security Council, Irish diplomats went all over the world, particularly to developing countries, looking for votes. Ireland received a huge vote and was subsequently elected to the Security Council. Our commitment regarding development aid was important in securing those votes and I support calls for a debate on this issue....
- Seanad: Ombudsman (Defence Forces) Bill 2002: Second Stage (Resumed). (6 Oct 2004)
Mary Henry: The Senator may take longer if she wishes.
- Seanad: Ombudsman (Defence Forces) Bill 2002: Second Stage (Resumed). (6 Oct 2004)
Mary Henry: Is that agreed? Agreed.
- Seanad: Ombudsman (Defence Forces) Bill 2002: Second Stage (Resumed). (6 Oct 2004)
Mary Henry: When is it proposed to sit again?
- Seanad: Educational Facilities: Motion. (6 Oct 2004)
Mary Henry: I thank Senator Norris for sharing his time with me. I welcome the Minister to the House. I am sure she will make a splendid contribution to education in this country. I agree with what Senator Norris has said. I too am concerned that Sion Hill graduates who, for the past 25 years have received Trinity College degrees, will now apparently have that degree abolished. Under the Universities...
- Seanad: Ombudsman (Defence Forces) Bill 2002: Second Stage. (6 Oct 2004)
Mary Henry: I wish to share my time with Senator O'Meara.
- Seanad: Ombudsman (Defence Forces) Bill 2002: Second Stage. (6 Oct 2004)
Mary Henry: I welcome the Minister to the House and welcome the speed with which the Government has brought forward this Bill. We were all alarmed at Dr. Eileen Doyle's report. We are glad it has been dealt with so rapidly and that she is monitoring the situation. We have great respect for and pride in our Defence Forces and it was sad to see such a large proportion felt they were subjected to bullying...
- Seanad: Ombudsman (Defence Forces) Bill 2002: Second Stage. (6 Oct 2004)
Mary Henry: Senator O'Rourke will be relieved to know that the Bill refers to the ombudsman as "he or she".
- Seanad: Ombudsman (Defence Forces) Bill 2002: Second Stage. (6 Oct 2004)
Mary Henry: Yes. Other Senators have also used the term "he".
- Seanad: Order of Business. (6 Oct 2004)
Mary Henry: At the end of the debate on the transfer of tried and sentenced persons on 23 June last, I asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he had any knowledge of untried and unsentenced persons transiting through Shannon Airport. The Minister said that while he did not, if such people were transiting through the airport, they would be subject to the Constitution. He said I should...
- Seanad: Ombudsman (Defence Forces) Bill 2002: Second Stage. (6 Oct 2004)
Mary Henry: I congratulate the Minister on his well-deserved promotion.
- Seanad: National Monuments (Amendment) Bill 2004: Second Stage. (1 Jul 2004)
Mary Henry: I thank Senator Cummins for sharing time. I welcome the Minister and commend him and his officials on the fact that the environment element of his Department appears to be in action â his speech is printed on both sides of the paper we were given. The heritage part, however, seems to have made a terrible mess of things. Senator Ormonde is being more than hopeful when she says she welcomes...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (1 Jul 2004)
Mary Henry: I support Senator Terry's call for a debate on prisons. I was also at the meeting in the women's prison in Mountjoy. There appears to be a one-man policy on prisons and prison building. We should have a debate on this issue early in the next session, if the Leader will organise it, and also on the proposals of the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform for the Central Mental Hospital....
