Joe O'Reilly: That will be fascinating. Does Dr. McDonnell agree that to deal with the housing issue, we must have a major infrastructural investment in water, energy and other areas to create the conditions where we can develop housing? I presume he agrees with that.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure, Public Service Reform and Digitalisation, and Taoiseach: The Impact of Tariffs on the Irish Economy: Nevin Economic Research Institute (16 Jul 2025)

Joe O'Reilly: Dr. McDonnell said, however, that one of the limitations to infrastructural development is the lack of capacity and personnel to do it. He said we should make it easier to enter construction. How could we do that? Second, does he think we could attract people in the construction sector back from abroad? I also have another question I am very anxious for Dr. McDonnell to answer.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure, Public Service Reform and Digitalisation, and Taoiseach: The Impact of Tariffs on the Irish Economy: Nevin Economic Research Institute (16 Jul 2025)

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure, Public Service Reform and Digitalisation, and Taoiseach: The Impact of Tariffs on the Irish Economy: Nevin Economic Research Institute (16 Jul 2025)

Joe O'Reilly: I have a son who puts that point to me every time I meet him for lunch. It is a very interesting one. Because it is the contemporary debate, could I bring Dr. McDonnell back to the question of the short-term measures such as energy credits? If I understand him correctly, he thinks the correct strategy is to target money at those most in need to cushion their passage through the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure, Public Service Reform and Digitalisation, and Taoiseach: The Impact of Tariffs on the Irish Economy: Nevin Economic Research Institute (16 Jul 2025)

Joe O'Reilly: I thank Dr. McDonnell. It has been fascinating to listen to his contributions and responses to specific questions this evening. It has been extraordinarily interesting. A very exciting issue arose in his response to Deputy Burke when he talked about attracting high-calibre researchers from America. That is a fascinating concept. The results of that could be great. To take a minor...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: General Scheme of Israeli Settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (Prohibition of Importation of Goods) Bill 2025: Discussion (Resumed) (16 Jul 2025)

Joe O'Reilly: I thank Mr. O'Brien for coming before the committee. He is very welcome and it was a pleasure to chat with him outside for a moment also. Mr. O'Brien is more than aware that the EU is preparing a suite of measures that member states could take that would be acceptable to deal with the horror that is Gaza. Does it give us cover that there is a European-wide debate and discussion? Does this...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: General Scheme of Israeli Settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (Prohibition of Importation of Goods) Bill 2025: Discussion (Resumed) (16 Jul 2025)

Joe O'Reilly: Mr. O'Brien said we have reputational damage from it. Is there any sense in which taking a moral stance and standing out in this way would give us a reputational advantage? Is there any way it is good for Ireland?

Joe O'Reilly: Mr. O'Brien has said there are real and material concerns. Is this anecdotal? There are the classic discussions we hear after a budget in the local pub, and all sorts of exaggerated opinions. Is this anecdotal with regard to what people are saying? How sure is Mr. O'Brien that there is a soundness to his concerns? Is it people blowing off a bit of steam?
