Topical Issue Debate: Public Sector Allowances Payments (5 Dec 2013)

Finian McGrath: I thank the Minister for his reply, particularly where he stated his commitment to ensuring that scarce public funds are expended on services, not on unsanctioned payments to senior managers. That is what we all agree on. My colleague, Deputy O'Donovan, should get his facts right. The dogs in the street know that the Independent TDs use their allowances to employ extra staff. I remind...

Topical Issue Debate: Public Sector Allowances Payments (5 Dec 2013)

Social Welfare and Pensions (No. 2) Bill 2013: Second Stage (5 Dec 2013)

(4 Dec 2013)

Finian McGrath: I support the Supplementary Estimate. I commend the Minister on yesterday's response to the Smithwick inquiry, which revealed collusion. Select Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Estimates for Public Services 2013
Vote 35 - Army Pensions (Supplementary)
(4 Dec 2013)

Finian McGrath: Okay. My second question is on the Minister's report on the 339 recruits. Are many applying to join the Defence Forces? From my constituency, I understand many young people are interested in joining but feel they have not got a chance. While the number of recruits is listed in the report as 339, is a figure available for the number of people applying to join the Defence Forces?
