- Seanad: Ferns Report: Statements (Resumed). (17 Nov 2005)
Paul Coghlan: There have been some instances of that in recent years and there was one notable one in my own party. In fairness, Deputy O'Donnell apologised for her over the top remarks. She wronged the Taoiseach by her silly reference to All Hallows. The church's role in education must be put in context. We would not have our current education system were it not for the number of national schools that are...
- Seanad: Ferns Report: Statements (Resumed). (17 Nov 2005)
Paul Coghlan: That is absolutely true.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (16 Nov 2005)
Paul Coghlan: Sadly, Senator Brian Hayes's remarks on gangland crime are all too accurate. As he said, a new offence of membership of a criminal gang needs to be created. The ability of these dying wasps to sting is still all too deadly.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (16 Nov 2005)
Paul Coghlan: I do. Has Operation Anvil been dropped or has it lapsed? If so, is it being revived and do gardaà have full confidence in it? Something is wrong and I look forward to hearing the Leader's response on this issue. I fully support Senator Brian Hayes's request for a debate on crime.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (16 Nov 2005)
Paul Coghlan: I would never deliberately be discourteous to the Leader.
- Seanad: Ferns Report: Statements (Resumed). (15 Nov 2005)
Paul Coghlan: I welcome the Minister of State to the House. He has been very patient and has been here for a long time listening to this debate. Picking up on Senator Maurice Hayes's final point, I start by congratulating Mr. Justice Francis D. Murphy on his report. I also congratulate Bishop Walsh on the manner in which he handled the matter. The report was thorough and competent, as one would expect from...
- Seanad: Ferns Report: Statements (Resumed). (15 Nov 2005)
Paul Coghlan: I appreciate that. They say there are two sides to every story. I would like to speak about education and about the Dublin situation.
- Seanad: Ferns Report: Statements (Resumed). (15 Nov 2005)
Paul Coghlan: I also wish to refer to a Deputy from the same party as the Acting Chairman. I read Deputy O'Donnell's speech in full. It attracted almost as much publicity as the Ferns Report. The media seemed to love it, or else they are in love with the Deputy. Her speech was an opportunistic cheap shot from the safety of the leafy liberal suburbs. It was riddled with inaccuracies and some outlandish...
- Seanad: Ferns Report: Statements (Resumed). (15 Nov 2005)
Paul Coghlan: I am glad of that. I would like to have the opportunity to say more, but I do not think the Acting Chairman will give me the latitude to go on for another five or ten minutes.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (15 Nov 2005)
Paul Coghlan: Yes, unfortunately. Tralee General Hospital is the second biggest acute hospital in the Health Service Executive's south-western area. It is not getting its fair share of resources, staffing or funding. Despite all the promises the accident and emergency unit has not been built. There is no full-time cardiologist there. As a Limerick man, the Cathaoirleach must share my concern in that regard...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (15 Nov 2005)
Paul Coghlan: Senator Finucane is quite right in referring to the appalling ongoing crime situation. I would also like to hear the views of the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform in this House. A year ago, the Minister told us that these people were on the back foot but, sadly, the dying wasps seem to be on the increase. I would like the Minister to attend the House to present a review of the...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (10 Nov 2005)
Paul Coghlan: It is a widely held view.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (10 Nov 2005)
Paul Coghlan: There should be a debate and the Minister should attend.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (10 Nov 2005)
Paul Coghlan: It is time we heard the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources, Deputy Noel Dempsey, on his communications strategy and the roll-out of broadband of which there has been much talk. We should not forget that some people are awaiting a basic telephone service so they can conduct normal business and contact the emergency services.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (10 Nov 2005)
Paul Coghlan: This is a classic example of privatisation leaving rural communities behind such as the people of the remote but beautiful Black Valley near the Gap of Dunloe at the foot of Carrantuohill and the MacGillycuddy Reeks in County Kerry.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (10 Nov 2005)
Paul Coghlan: The Cathaoirleach would agree that this is discrimination and must be redressed. I ask the Leader to invite the Minister to come before us on the matter.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (9 Nov 2005)
Paul Coghlan: I agree with Senator O'Toole in calling for a debate on the issue of the Great Blasket Island. There was a debate in this House on this issue before many of the current Members were here, when Mr. Haughey was Taoiseach. It was a worthwhile debate but much has happened since then. We do not wish the matter to descend into a mess. The Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Deputy...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (9 Nov 2005)
Paul Coghlan: We do not want to face the appalling vista of less Irish food being produced, fewer local shops and the duping of consumers by gimmicks. We should have the debate which has been called for already. I will see the Leas-Chathaoirleach in his office with regard to the technological discrimination perpetuated against the people in the Black Valley in Killarney, County Kerry.

Paul Coghlan: Amending legislation will be necessary.
