Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Rising Cost of Motor Insurance: Discussion (Resumed) (15 Sep 2016)

John McGuinness: That is fine. What the witnesses are telling me now is that, apart from the published information through the Central Bank, there is other information that is helpful to the marketplace in terms of insurance houses and big companies. If they were to pay Insurance Ireland €10,000, it would make that information available to them. Is that right or wrong?

John McGuinness: The witness is not answering the question. Insurance Ireland sends it data to the Central Bank. I understand all that. Is there extra information that is available to Insurance Ireland that it makes available to the likes of the client that we had this morning that it does not put into the public domain but that may be of interest to companies coming into the market? Is that the case?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Rising Cost of Motor Insurance: Discussion (Resumed) (15 Sep 2016)

John McGuinness: I believe the most important point is this, Mr. Thompson. I now believe, from this exchange, that Insurance Ireland has information that it does not share and that it should share to enable Ireland Inc. to have a competitive insurance sector. That is what I now believe from this exchange. Senator Conway-Walsh, who raised the issue again, might like to address that.

John McGuinness: We may return to the matter in the context of our report and what the Central Bank might say. There is one more question before we go. I am not going to delay. The Irish Road Haulage Association stated it had a public forum for its members and a question was raised by the president in respect of insurance for trucks that were abroad 90% of the time and their insurance premiums but...

John McGuinness: Yes. We will return to it. For the moment, we thank the witnesses for attending. It has been a long session for them but it has been worthwhile from our side. We will now adjourn until 9 a.m. on 29 September, when we will meet the Ministers. We may schedule another meeting, depending on how we get on with our own report.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Rising Cost of Motor Insurance: Discussion (Resumed) (13 Sep 2016)
