Joint Oireachtas Committee on Future of Mental Health Care: Mental Health Services: Discussion (1 Feb 2018)

Máire Devine: I express an interest, being very closely aligned with the PNA. I welcome the witnesses. I am delighted to see the response around this table. We have been raising this issue for years and have not got this message out of how desperate the situation is in our mental health services. I want to go back on a few points. I talked a lot in past committee meetings. I disagree with Deputy...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Future of Mental Health Care: Mental Health Services: Discussion (1 Feb 2018)

Máire Devine: We know about the loss of nursing staff and this is probably due to the austerity cuts. There are other factors but those cuts happened ten years ago and that is when we started haemorrhaging staff. They were severe cuts which went to the core of the service. There was no foresight and the service shot itself in the foot. We and in particular the kids with mental health issues are living...

Seanad: Order of Business (1 Feb 2018)

Máire Devine: I am acutely aware there are many pressing issues in our country that need to be discussed, addressed, planned for and legislated for. Today, I want to use the opportunity on the Order of Business to highlight reform of the Seanad and the imperative that we get to grips with reform, given Members of this Seanad have been in this House for almost two years. Sinn Féin, along with all the...

Seanad: Order of Business (1 Feb 2018)

Máire Devine: I wish to talk about respect. Respect is at times absent and, reluctantly, I have come to the conclusion that it is more so towards women. I am no wilting violet and everything I do to deliver in this Chamber comes with a passion for, a recognition of and support for co-operation to cure the ills of this country. It is wholly inappropriate for me and my sisters in this Chamber to be...

Seanad: Order of Business (1 Feb 2018)

Máire Devine: I ask the Leader, in light of the centenary of women's suffrage, to have a respectful, compassionate and inclusive debate on this essential part of Seanad reform - respect - and to get our House in order.

Seanad: Order of Business (1 Feb 2018)

Máire Devine: I ask the Cathaoirleach to give my apologies.

Seanad: Order of Business (31 Jan 2018)

Máire Devine: I propose to amend the Order of Business to include motion No. 12 on the Order Paper, submitted by the Sinn Féin group, without debate. It is about children with serious and complex medical needs and the community participation in primary care that is vital. It is widely accepted best practice that service users should be involved at every stage of service development and...

Seanad: Order of Business (31 Jan 2018)

Máire Devine: I am not being unfair to the Cathaoirleach. That is for him to decide.

Seanad: Order of Business (31 Jan 2018)

Máire Devine: I am very disappointed for carers and parents in particular. Procedure has got in the way of passing this motion. I put it on the Order Paper in consideration of its urgency. This does not give succour to those children, parents and carers. However, I will resubmit it on the Order Paper for next Tuesday. Incidentally, it is fewer than two thirds of Senators who were not aware of it.

Seanad: Order of Business (31 Jan 2018)

Máire Devine: Well said.
