- Seanad: Seanad Bill 2013: Committee Stage (12 Nov 2014)
Paschal Mooney: The contribution I made earlier actually referred to section 2 but we were on section 1 at the time so I want to apologise for that slip. At the same time, I hope that the sponsors of the Bill would take account of the remarks I made. The Minister of State might have a view to express as well.
- Seanad: Seanad Bill 2013: Committee Stage (12 Nov 2014)
Paschal Mooney: I am sorry, but I have referred to other contributions. This is Committee Stage and I have no doubt that there will be opportunities throughout the passage of the Bill to address wider issues. I would be grateful if the Senator would focus on section 1, which deals with the Short Title and commencement of the Bill.
- Seanad: Seanad Bill 2013: Committee Stage (12 Nov 2014)
Paschal Mooney: The Senator is not alone. There seems to be a trend because there was not a debate on Second Stage. I was as guilty of it as anybody else.
- Seanad: Seanad Bill 2013: Committee Stage (12 Nov 2014)
Paschal Mooney: I want to deal with section 1. Is section 1 agreed?

- Seanad: Seanad Bill 2013: Committee Stage (12 Nov 2014)
Paschal Mooney: There will be other opportunities to discuss the Bill. I want to get through section 1.

Paschal Mooney: I ask the Senator to forgive me for not calling on him earlier.
- Seanad: Seanad Bill 2013: Committee Stage (12 Nov 2014)
Paschal Mooney: I do not wish to interrupt the Senator, but we have already had one Second Stage speech and we are talking specifically about section 1 now. He may have an opportunity on a later Stage to elaborate on the line he has gone down, but with respect, we are talking about section 1. It would be helpful to the sponsors of the Bill as well.

Paschal Mooney: Sorry Senator, please. We are talking here about section 1----
- Seanad: Seanad Bill 2013: Committee Stage (12 Nov 2014)
Paschal Mooney: What is good for the goose is good for the gander. I have already indicated the same thing to Senator Cullinane. Senator Keane is now into a Second Stage speech. This is Committee Stage.
- Seanad: Seanad Bill 2013: Committee Stage (12 Nov 2014)
Paschal Mooney: I commend Senators Zappone and Quinn not only on their introduction of this Bill and their motives in doing so but also on the manner in which they orchestrated the "No" campaign last year. Their valuable contribution should be put once again on the record of this House. However, I am somewhat disappointed with the suggestion by Senator Zappone in her opening remarks - I am sure she did not...
- Seanad: Education (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2014: Fifth Stage (12 Nov 2014)
Paschal Mooney: I expressed some concern about this when it arose previously. Quite frankly, it is just about money. It is about the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland marketing itself abroad as a university because if it did not do so, the people it is hoping will come might not understand what its status was. It reminds me of how, when one goes to the US as a Senator or Deputy, one has a much more...
- Seanad: Education (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2014: Fifth Stage (12 Nov 2014)
Paschal Mooney: I am asking why it has been singled out.
- Seanad: Education (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2014: Fifth Stage (12 Nov 2014)
Paschal Mooney: Why is it being singled out in this regard and why is special legislation coming through when other institutes might like to have similar help from the Government? There are plenty of others.
- Seanad: Order of Business (12 Nov 2014)
Paschal Mooney: I join with those who have commented on the concessions made by the Minister for Education and Skills, Deputy Jan O'Sullivan, on junior certificate reform. I applaud the teachers' unions, and particularly the TUI, which stood alone on the issue initially and was joined later by the other teacher unions so that a collective approach was taken. This has obviously resulted in a rowing back by...
- Seanad: Order of Business (12 Nov 2014)
Paschal Mooney: -----between those in corporate America and what is happening on the ground here, and the attitude that people have towards the past, about which Sinn Féin seem to have amnesia. In that context, I think that what Deputy Gerry Adams said in New York is totally unacceptable. I say this as a working journalist, as well as for those from across the journalistic field. Every international...
- Seanad: Order of Business (12 Nov 2014)
Paschal Mooney: He seems to have total amnesia about that particular attitude as well. I think what he said was unacceptable. It will be a matter for him to decide what he is going to do next. Not only did he say it at the meeting but he then went onto social media and actually justified it.
- Seanad: Order of Business (12 Nov 2014)
Paschal Mooney: It was historically inaccurate to suggest that Michael Collins had gone in and pointed a gun at the editor of the Irish Independent. It never happened, but it seems that, as with most other revisionist attitudes that Sinn Féin has towards Irish history, this was the way it was protected.
