Brian Stanley: There are resources there that can be used better.

Public Accounts Committee: National Transport Authority: Financial Statements 2020 (27 Jan 2022)

Brian Stanley: It is a win-win. Many people would feel that. I look forward to progress on that. Some members have indicated that they wish to come in a second time.

Public Accounts Committee: National Transport Authority: Financial Statements 2020 (27 Jan 2022)

Brian Stanley: I call Deputy Catherine Murphy.

Public Accounts Committee: National Transport Authority: Financial Statements 2020 (27 Jan 2022)

Brian Stanley: We are up against the clock. A specific proposal is being put to the witnesses in relation that group of villages. It is perhaps a local issue that the NTA can examine and revert back to the Deputy. I call Deputy Devlin.

Public Accounts Committee: National Transport Authority: Financial Statements 2020 (27 Jan 2022)

Brian Stanley: Does Ms Brogan want to come back with a brief reply on the taxi issue?

Public Accounts Committee: National Transport Authority: Financial Statements 2020 (27 Jan 2022)

Brian Stanley: I thank Mr. Gaston. Does Ms Brogan want to reply?

Public Accounts Committee: National Transport Authority: Financial Statements 2020 (27 Jan 2022)

Brian Stanley: Before we conclude, I want to ask Ms Graham about bus shelters. While it sounds like a small issue, I have engaged with Ms Graham on this many times over the past 11 years and although some progress has been made, it is terribly slow. I have a couple of things to note, one of which is they cost a lot of money. I have observed two things. First, some of the areas that we have put forward...

Public Accounts Committee: National Transport Authority: Financial Statements 2020 (27 Jan 2022)

Brian Stanley: Have you, though?

Public Accounts Committee: National Transport Authority: Financial Statements 2020 (27 Jan 2022)

Brian Stanley: There should be resources too, in that department. Could Ms Graham come back to me about the N78 route of Crettyard and Ballylynan and the R445 route through Borris-in-Ossory?

Public Accounts Committee: National Transport Authority: Financial Statements 2020 (27 Jan 2022)

Brian Stanley: I thank the NTA and the Department for joining us here today. I thank the staff of the NTA and the Department for their work in preparing the documentation and briefing notes for us. I also thank Mr. Seamus McCarthy, the Comptroller and Auditor General, for, as always, assisting the committee. Is it agreed to request the clerk to seek any follow-up information following the agreed...

Public Accounts Committee: National Transport Authority: Financial Statements 2020 (27 Jan 2022)

Brian Stanley: That is okay. I have been watching out for the Deputy all morning. I know that he was held up unavoidably with other parliamentary business.

Public Accounts Committee: National Transport Authority: Financial Statements 2020 (27 Jan 2022)

Brian Stanley: It is important that the men take that seriously. If the Deputy has any particular questions for the NTA, Ms Graham will take those on board and she can follow up with him. The committee will suspend until 1.30 p.m. We will resume in public session to consider correspondence and other business of the committee.

Public Accounts Committee: Business of Committee (27 Jan 2022)

Brian Stanley: The business before us today includes minutes, accounts and financial statements, correspondence, the work programme and any other business. We will go into private session before adjourning. The first item is the minutes of the meeting from 20 January, which have been circulated to members. Do members wish to raise any matters relating to those minutes? If not, are the minutes agreed?...

Public Accounts Committee: Business of Committee (27 Jan 2022)

Brian Stanley: With regard to St. James's Hospital, the amount is €516 million.

Public Accounts Committee: Business of Committee (27 Jan 2022)

Brian Stanley: Yes. The turnover is €516 million but if the amount is over €500,000, that is what we raise questions over. How much is it?

Public Accounts Committee: Business of Committee (27 Jan 2022)

Brian Stanley: Perhaps Mr. McCarthy would like to address that.

Public Accounts Committee: Business of Committee (27 Jan 2022)

Brian Stanley: That clarifies one aspect. Another is that this committee is not in a position to deal with this on its own. Due to situations like this one, the cervical smear tests and so on, compensation is running into the billions of euro at a time when we are trying to get investment to fill gaps in key areas of the health services and other services. This is a question that the Oireachtas needs to...

Public Accounts Committee: Business of Committee (27 Jan 2022)

Brian Stanley: We are digressing, but as legislators, there is a job to be done in terms of putting in place systems of accountability. I have-----

Public Accounts Committee: Business of Committee (27 Jan 2022)

Brian Stanley: It is clear that there is a problem with the systems of accountability. I find it frustrating. As an Oireachtas, all parties should come together and try to do something to put in place not only checks and balances, but also penalties for when people clearly allow a situation like what happened in Kerry or with the cervical smear tests to arise. I want to move on.

Public Accounts Committee: Business of Committee (27 Jan 2022)

Brian Stanley: We can make proposals but-----
