Seanad: Gaeltacht Bill 2012: Committee Stage (28 Jun 2012)

David Norris: I strongly support what Senator Barrett said and he said it with passion and dignity. He is standing up for the principle of democracy. The Minister of State is right in one sense. It is not a vote in a national election.

Seanad: Gaeltacht Bill 2012: Committee Stage (28 Jun 2012)

David Norris: This is what has been talked about just two minutes ago.

David Norris: The Minister is a most gentlemanly person.

Seanad: Gaeltacht Bill 2012: Committee Stage (28 Jun 2012)

David Norris: He is a man who speaks beautifully and eloquently in both English and Irish and he had me with him until he mentioned the bagpipes.

Seanad: Gaeltacht Bill 2012: Committee Stage (28 Jun 2012)

David Norris: The definition of a gentleman is one who knows how to play the bagpipes but refrains from doing so. Had he mentioned the uilleann pipes he would have had me with him completely. When he went on to talk about Ulster Scots, I was completely and absolutely gone, and I do not give a tuppenny damn about Wilson, McKinley, Calvin Coolidge, Taft or any of them from wherever they came. I will tell...

Seanad: Gaeltacht Bill 2012: Committee Stage (28 Jun 2012)

David Norris: It is not a language, it is just a fudge. I used to get this twaddle sent down to me about Ulster Scots which was written down. It is a dialect, not a language. Seanad: National Cultural Institutions: Motion (27 Jun 2012)

David Norris: I am also very happy to welcome the Minister and his officials, whom I recognise, to the House. I have dealt with the Department over many years. This Minister is appropriately placed, and I have known him for a long number of years, as we have shared an interest in various cultural issues. There is naturally a particular Kerry emphasis, which is perfectly appropriate, as my focus is on...

Seanad: National Cultural Institutions: Motion (27 Jun 2012)

David Norris: The Taoiseach does not deserve a compliment if he has appointed them to the Titanic, if he carries out his plan to abolish the Seanad.

Seanad: Offshore Oil and Gas Exploration: Statements (27 Jun 2012)

David Norris: I welcome the Minister. I was very interested in the comments of my colleague from Sinn Féin who has reservations about the Minister's position. I would probably share some of them. I will go back to the beginning. My interest in the issue was first sparked by the Keating principles. That was a long time ago, in 1975, when I was beginning to get interested in politics. I knew Mr. Justin...

Seanad: Offshore Oil and Gas Exploration: Statements (27 Jun 2012)

David Norris: Did the Minister say I would take a bite at him?

Seanad: Offshore Oil and Gas Exploration: Statements (27 Jun 2012)
