Joint Oireachtas Committee on Future of Mental Health Care: Medication and Talk Therapy: Discussion (7 Feb 2018)

Máire Devine: I will be very quick. I thank the witnesses for their presentations. One of the witnesses mentioned that the suicide statistics decreased in the ten years after 2006. I disagree with that because it was the period of the lost decade and there was an increase in suicide in this country. Greece was first because of all the turmoil there. I disagree on that but perhaps we have caught up and...

Seanad: Planning and Development (Amendment) Bill 2016: Second Stage (7 Feb 2018)

Máire Devine: Cuirim fáilte roimh an Aire Stáit. I welcome the chance to speak on the Planning and Development (Amendment) Bill 2016, particularly because the Tribunal to Inquire into Certain Planning Matters and Payments dealt with issues of corruption in the planning process. It is disappointing that it is taken so long for Government to implement some of its recommendations. I strongly agree...

Seanad: Planning and Development (Amendment) Bill 2016: Second Stage (7 Feb 2018)

Máire Devine: It is unclear what the procedure is for putting the NPF on a statutory footing. This has not been done before. We must have an Oireachtas debate and vote on this important document before it is given legislative footing. Due to the lack of engagement on these important issues which I have raised, Sinn Féin cannot support this legislation today.

Seanad: Mental Health (Amendment) Bill 2016: Committee Stage (7 Feb 2018)

Máire Devine: Cuirim fáilte roimh an Aire Stáit. I commend Senator Freeman for tabling this amendment to the Mental Health Act. It is imperative the House supports it and sees it through. Last year, for two days, Members, as well as the Minister of State, heard from parents and professionals on this issue in the House in a public consultation process. We heard the heartache of parents, as...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Cybersecurity for Children and Young Adults: Discussion (Resumed) (7 Feb 2018)

Máire Devine: I have one observation to make. I am sorry for being in and out. Two weeks ago a woman came to discuss the issue of housing. She had an 18-month-old baby who was chewing on an iPhone. She turned to me and said the baby was mad about the iPhone and that she was getting her an iPad.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Cybersecurity for Children and Young Adults: Discussion (Resumed) (7 Feb 2018)

Máire Devine: It is. Every kid we see is chewing on an iPhone. It is also being used as a teething ring.

Seanad: Commencement Matters: School Accommodation Provision (6 Feb 2018)

Máire Devine: Cuirim fáilte roimh an Aire go dtí an Teach. I believe it is his first time addressing a Commencement matter for me in this Chamber. I want him to be generous and to act boldly with regard to the matter I raise. Like the majority of parents, I wanted a more progressive education for my children. Accordingly, I was part of the parents group which established the successful...

Seanad: Commencement Matters: School Accommodation Provision (6 Feb 2018)

Máire Devine: I thank the Minister for liaising with the Edmund Rice Schools Trust but I guess the word that stands out for me is temporary. It is not going to solve the problem. Will the Minister visit the school? I know he cannot visit every school in the country. I understand his workload but this is the first one to be divested and I think it would send out a great message and follow on from...

Seanad: Order of Business (6 Feb 2018)

Máire Devine: I want to congratulate Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh and send our best wishes and love to him on his new adventure. I will miss him. I wish to amend the Order of Business today to include No. 63, motion 12, on the Order Paper, a motion which is to be taken without debate. I accept that the Minister has tried to address this issue but his suggestions have not gone far enough. I hope...
