Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: National Aviation Policy (Resumed): Regional Airports (15 Feb 2023)

Gerard Craughwell: I live in Dublin and fly from here, but I wish I flew from Shannon, Cork or one of the other regional airports. The presentations were impressive and some of the most positive I have seen at this committee. My colleagues are from the regions and have more pertinent questions to ask, but I support everything for which the witnesses are looking. I have seen Shannon and Cork. I will see the...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (14 Feb 2023)

Gerard Craughwell: First, I wish to express my condolences to the family of Acting Sergeant Major Declan "Doc" O'Connell from the Curragh. Sadly, he is the second from the Cadet School in recent times to lose his life. They are going through tough times down there. Last week, I spoke about the helicopter that was forced to land in Derry as a result of an emergency declared by the pilot. I got a reply from...

Gerard Craughwell: We might put one in Castlebar

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (9 Feb 2023)

Gerard Craughwell: Over the last number of years, I have spoken frequently on search and rescue in this country. We lost four very good people when R116 crashed off the coast of Mayo. This morning, I received information that R117 from Sligo was flying off Derry on Sunday. The aircraft was overstressed, lost control and exceeded its maximum airspeed. The UK Civil Aviation Authority has impounded the...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (9 Feb 2023)

Gerard Craughwell: Yes. I am proposing an amendment to the Order of Business because of the seriousness of what I have just learned. I believe the Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Deputy Chambers, is responsible for search and rescue. He needs to come to this House to deal with this issue as a matter of urgency today. This is, without doubt, the most serious incident since the loss of R116....

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (9 Feb 2023)

Gerard Craughwell: I want the Minister of State, Deputy Chambers, to come to the House. First, I want him to advise us as to what happened when the aircraft was held in Derry airport from Sunday afternoon until Tuesday evening. I want to know the exact cause. Second, I want answers with respect to the number of qualified and licensed engineers who are operating at the company. Third, I wish to know whether...

Gerard Craughwell: I welcome the witnesses from the HSE.

Gerard Craughwell: Shall I continue?

Committee on Public Petitions: Public Petition on St. Brigid’s Hospital, Carrick-on-Suir (Resumed): Health Service Executive (9 Feb 2023)

Gerard Craughwell: Shall I continue?

Committee on Public Petitions: Public Petition on St. Brigid’s Hospital, Carrick-on-Suir (Resumed): Health Service Executive (9 Feb 2023)

Gerard Craughwell: The Chairman asked when the last time the flood plain that is alleged to exist actually flooded in the area where St. Brigid's is located. Nobody seems to know anything about a flood so could Mr. Ruane tell me the last time it flooded?

Committee on Public Petitions: Public Petition on St. Brigid’s Hospital, Carrick-on-Suir (Resumed): Health Service Executive (9 Feb 2023)

Gerard Craughwell: That is fine. We do not need to go further into it. Mr. Ruane has no evidence of a flood there.

Committee on Public Petitions: Public Petition on St. Brigid’s Hospital, Carrick-on-Suir (Resumed): Health Service Executive (9 Feb 2023)

Gerard Craughwell: That is fine.

Committee on Public Petitions: Public Petition on St. Brigid’s Hospital, Carrick-on-Suir (Resumed): Health Service Executive (9 Feb 2023)

Gerard Craughwell: That is fine. We could apply that to anywhere in the country. It never flooded before but it might flood. Ms Walsh is director of nursing so she would be the ideal person to deal with infection control. We are talking about shutting down St. Brigid's because of infection control issues among other issues. All the witnesses exaggerated the number of beds. They are four-bed wards, not...

Committee on Public Petitions: Public Petition on St. Brigid’s Hospital, Carrick-on-Suir (Resumed): Health Service Executive (9 Feb 2023)

Gerard Craughwell: I appreciate that as director of nursing, Ms Walsh would be very good at making sure everything was right in her area of expertise. How many cases of cross-infection were reported to the HSE during the five years prior to closure? Infection control seems to be one of the major reasons why we are closing down these wards so how many people suffered cross-infection?

Committee on Public Petitions: Public Petition on St. Brigid’s Hospital, Carrick-on-Suir (Resumed): Health Service Executive (9 Feb 2023)

Gerard Craughwell: Could Ms Killeen White get that figure for the committee?
