Michael McCarthy: I am thinking of my bailiwick in west Cork. It is approximately 120 miles from the south of Cork city to south and west Kerry. There is a considerable number of volunteers, be they in sports, political or other organisations. In any one town, one will note various committees, including for Tidy Towns and the Red Cross. How does one measure the number scientifically? One could say that...
