- Seanad: Intoxicating Liquor Bill 2003: Second Stage. (18 Jun 2003)
Ann Ormonde: They have to take full responsibility. Everybody knows his or her rights but with rights there are responsibilities. If all those points could be incorporated into a future Bill, perhaps under a separate agency and a separate Minister dealing with this area, the public would be pleased. I congratulate the Minister, who is responding well to this problem. I invite him to make it known to the...
- Seanad: Convention on the Future of Europe: Statements. (10 Jun 2003)
Ann Ormonde: I welcome the Minister of State, Deputy Michael Ahern, who has replaced the Minister of State, Deputy Roche, at this debate. I preface my contribution by congratulating Deputy Roche, and other members of the delegation, who worked for us at the Convention over the past 16 months. The purpose of the Convention was to reflect what happened at Nice one, and particularly at Nice two, to see how...
- Seanad: Convention on the Future of Europe: Statements. (10 Jun 2003)
Ann Ormonde: I take the opportunity to thank the Minister of State, Deputy Gallagher, for his response to the concerns expressed during this afternoon's debate. I also thank the other Ministers of State, Deputies Roche and Michael Ahern, who attended during the earlier stages of the debate. Sitting suspended at 5.45 p.m. and resumed at 6p.m.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (29 May 2003)
Ann Ormonde: In relation to the many calls from both sides for a debate on planning, I spoke to the Minister for the Environment and Local Government yesterday and relayed the views expressed in the House on many occasions on one-off housing, recycling, staffing and appeals to An Bord Pleanála and the length of time they take. The Minister is aware of these views and said he would like to come to the...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (28 May 2003)
Ann Ormonde: I join my colleagues in the call for an update briefing on the Convention on the Future for Europe for which I asked the Leader two weeks ago. There are still sensitive areas within the consensus of opinion on areas such as the future of the Union's institutions and taxation policies. There was an interesting meeting yesterday with the French foreign affairs delegation when many of these...
- Seanad: Auctioneering Profession: Motion. (28 May 2003)
Ann Ormonde: I welcome the Minister of State and the motion. I am delighted that it gave me food for thought. I did not prepare a written contribution to the debate because I wish to speak about my experience in this area. Most auctioneers I know are sincere and do their work magnificently. I have no difficulty with them. However, there is no doubt that there is a perception that some have not performed...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (22 May 2003)
Ann Ormonde: Long may it last.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (22 May 2003)
Ann Ormonde: One Kerryman to another.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (22 May 2003)
Ann Ormonde: Small is beautiful.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (21 May 2003)
Ann Ormonde: It is an ordinary amendment, which surely the Senator's party would table.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (21 May 2003)
Ann Ormonde: I look forward to the magnificent debate in Private Members' time which promises to be lively. The Opposition will get as much from the Government side as the latter has received in recent weeks from the former. It will be worthwhile and Opposition Members will get the time they require.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (21 May 2003)
Ann Ormonde: The Opposition will get a lively debate, which we welcome. I support Senator Ryan's call for statements on the behaviour of truck drivers. They are a disgrace and seem to be answerable to no one, especially late at night when they think they have a clear road to themselves. I have recent experience of their behaviour and was terrified by it because they were undoubtedly driving in excess of...
- Seanad: Rural Development Policy: Statements (Resumed). - Third Level Fees: Motion. (21 May 2003)
Ann Ormonde: I welcome the Minister of State to the Chamber. I have so far listened to a very lively debate, which I had expected. I do not want to talk about the narrow issue of third level fees. I want the debate to be broader than that. When I began to think about the issue, I realised it was all about the funding of education. I asked myself whether or not we are getting value for money. There is a...
- Seanad: Rural Development Policy: Statements (Resumed). - Third Level Fees: Motion. (21 May 2003)
Ann Ormonde: How much of this debate is the result of spin doctoring? I have never experiencedâ
- Seanad: Rural Development Policy: Statements (Resumed). - Third Level Fees: Motion. (21 May 2003)
Ann Ormonde: âsuch spin doctoring as that which I have witnessed this evening. However, the Opposition Senators are going nowhere. It is empty as a tin can without anything in it.
- Seanad: Rural Development Policy: Statements (Resumed). - Third Level Fees: Motion. (21 May 2003)
Ann Ormonde: The Senator should not distract me. This debate is concerned with how best we can encourage people to enter a suitable area of education in order to maximise their ability and potential. The challenge for us in the future will be to realise that the profile has changed. There are post-leaving certificate courses and excellent courses on offer.
- Seanad: Rural Development Policy: Statements (Resumed). - Third Level Fees: Motion. (21 May 2003)
Ann Ormonde: We have to talk about that issue in a broader context. As already stated, there are many programmes on offer and people in the middle income category should not have to pay fees. I make no apologies for saying that. However, there is no harm in examining this matter.
- Seanad: Rural Development Policy: Statements (Resumed). - Third Level Fees: Motion. (21 May 2003)
Ann Ormonde: What is wrong with looking at the system of third level fees and the opportunities and challenges that exist? I have no difficulty with that. The Minister is right to call for a review. When it is complete, we could engage in a brainstorming exerciseâ
- Seanad: Rural Development Policy: Statements (Resumed). - Third Level Fees: Motion. (21 May 2003)
Ann Ormonde: There has been so much spin doctoring in respect of this matter this evening I feel that, when I leave the Chamber, further spin will be put on it. Where do we go from here?
- Seanad: Rural Development Policy: Statements (Resumed). - Third Level Fees: Motion. (21 May 2003)
Ann Ormonde: Let us have the review; it is as simple as that. We do not have to ask the Progressive Democrats anything.
