Seanad: Order of Business (23 Nov 2016)

Jerry Buttimer: None of us wants to go back to the dark old days. We want progress and reconciliation between both sides of our communities to continue.

Seanad: Order of Business (23 Nov 2016)

Jerry Buttimer: Yes, all sides. I would be happy for the Minister to come to the House to have that uncomfortable conversation. Senator Gabrielle McFadden raised the issue of the need for consultant-led geriatrician teams in communities. This time of the year is an interesting time in our hospitals. Yesterday, there was a huge surge in the number of people attending emergency departments. The Government...

Seanad: Order of Business (23 Nov 2016)

Jerry Buttimer: I apologise for missing the Senator. I have no problem about having the Minister come to the House to discuss Palestine. There are different views on the issue, and it is important to have the debate. The Senator may raise it during Private Member's time or by way of a Commencement matter. The Minister would be happy to come to the House to debate it in the new year.

Seanad: Micro-plastic and Micro-bead Pollution Prevention Bill 2016: Second Stage (23 Nov 2016)

Jerry Buttimer: I wish to put on record that there is no obstruction from the Government side. Senator Craughwell's hysterics are best suited to the Gaiety or Cork Opera House rather than the Seanad Chamber.

Seanad: Micro-plastic and Micro-bead Pollution Prevention Bill 2016: Second Stage (23 Nov 2016)

Jerry Buttimer: This morning, on the Order of Business, he spoke about new politics. I have acted-----

Seanad: Micro-plastic and Micro-bead Pollution Prevention Bill 2016: Second Stage (23 Nov 2016)

Jerry Buttimer: Senator O'Sullivan will, I hope, confirm that, as Leader of the House, I have spoken to her with the Minister, Deputy Coveney. We have facilitated debate this evening on the Private Members' Bill. If one were to read some of the tweets-----

Seanad: Micro-plastic and Micro-bead Pollution Prevention Bill 2016: Second Stage (23 Nov 2016)

Jerry Buttimer: Hold on a second. Tóg é go bog é. If one were to read some of the tweets, one would swear that Government were obstructing the Bill. We are not.

Seanad: Micro-plastic and Micro-bead Pollution Prevention Bill 2016: Second Stage (23 Nov 2016)

Jerry Buttimer: The Minister has been clear. He will debate with Senator O'Sullivan. In principle, what is trying to be achieved is what the Minister wants to arrive at as well. There is a fundamental problem, however, and sometimes Senator Craughwell finds it hard to understand that to get to point C, one must go through point B.

Seanad: Micro-plastic and Micro-bead Pollution Prevention Bill 2016: Second Stage (23 Nov 2016)

Jerry Buttimer: Some people oppose Government at every opportunity. They should reflect on how we manage our business and get things done. I give credit to Senator O'Sullivan for the Bill she brings before us and the aspiration within it, which we support and want to see enacted. However, to achieve the result we all want, a process must be undertaken and gone through. The last thing we want is to have...

Seanad: Micro-plastic and Micro-bead Pollution Prevention Bill 2016: Second Stage (23 Nov 2016)

Jerry Buttimer: I will let the Minister remark on that in his address. It is important to recognise that much work has gone into the Bill. Those of us who support its ethos want to see the right result. We should try to arrive at and achieve the end result. In fairness to the Green Party and Senator O'Sullivan, for whom I have much admiration, we want to see a Bill that is constitutional and that can...

Seanad: Micro-plastic and Micro-bead Pollution Prevention Bill 2016: Second Stage (23 Nov 2016)

Jerry Buttimer: Hold on.

Seanad: Micro-plastic and Micro-bead Pollution Prevention Bill 2016: Second Stage (23 Nov 2016)

Jerry Buttimer: We should acknowledge, to be fair to Deputy Coveney, who is a constituency colleague of mine in Cork South-Central, that he has demonstrated, since this Seanad convened, a willingness to come into the House, engage and work with Members to make legislation better, and that applies to this Bill. Senator Ó Clochartaigh raised issues, and the Minister came in and addressed them. The...

Seanad: Micro-plastic and Micro-bead Pollution Prevention Bill 2016: Second Stage (23 Nov 2016)

Jerry Buttimer: The Labour Party as well. Sorry, I forgot that Senator Humphreys is here as well.

Seanad: Micro-plastic and Micro-bead Pollution Prevention Bill 2016: Second Stage (23 Nov 2016)

Jerry Buttimer: After the Order of Business today, the bed is definitely getting lukewarm with Senator Humphreys, but I assure him that he is more than welcome to come back into our bed.

Seanad: Micro-plastic and Micro-bead Pollution Prevention Bill 2016: Second Stage (23 Nov 2016)

Jerry Buttimer: I am disappointed that Senator Humphreys refers to dark forces. He must be watching or reading bad stuff at the moment because, as Leader of the House, I do not obstruct anybody in trying to get business done.

Seanad: Micro-plastic and Micro-bead Pollution Prevention Bill 2016: Second Stage (23 Nov 2016)

Jerry Buttimer: I know. I just wish Senator Humphreys was back in our bed because the Labour Party was a very good partner and we worked well together. The proof is that the country is flying again. It was a partnership Government that brought it back, to be fair.

Seanad: Micro-plastic and Micro-bead Pollution Prevention Bill 2016: Second Stage (23 Nov 2016)

Jerry Buttimer: I regret that Labour opted not to come back into the bed. The former Minister of State, Senator Coffey, has outlined - as will the Minister of State, Deputy English - why the Government cannot support the specific wording of the Bill but that it will agree to the principle of what is trying to be achieved. It is important that rather than divide the House, we take what is good from the Bill...

Seanad: Micro-plastic and Micro-bead Pollution Prevention Bill 2016: Second Stage (23 Nov 2016)

Jerry Buttimer: We had members of Fine Gael opposed in the previous Seanad in the by-election.

Seanad: Order of Business (22 Nov 2016)

Jerry Buttimer: The Order of Business is No. 1, motion re Joint Sub-Committee on Public Petitions, to be taken on the conclusion of the Order of Business without debate; No. 3, Statute Law Revision Bill 2016 - Committee and Remaining Stages, to be taken on the conclusion of No. 1 and to conclude not later than 5.15 p.m., if not previously concluded; and No. 2, statements on the horticulture industry, to be...

Seanad: Order of Business (22 Nov 2016)

Jerry Buttimer: The Leas-Chathaoirleach is wrong.
