Ceisteanna - Questions (Resumed) - Priority Questions: Public Transport Provision (7 Dec 2016)

Shane Ross: The Deputy is correct that I briefed the Cabinet yesterday. No decisions were to be made. I was keeping them informed and in touch with the current situation and its gravity, which I would not like to underestimate. One should not believe everything that one reads about what I said. The Deputy referred to cuts to six to eight routes. I addressed the issue of various routes but the...

Ceisteanna - Questions (Resumed) - Priority Questions: Public Transport Provision (7 Dec 2016)

Shane Ross: I thank Deputy Troy once again for his kind comments. It is a pity that he was not present at the select committee meeting earlier to be able to make the same comments. Not only was he not there, his substitute was also not there. He should not talk to me about waking up and smelling the coffee. It looks to me as if he did not wake up at all today. Unfortunately, the Fianna...

Vote 31 - Transport, Tourism and Sport (Supplementary)
(7 Dec 2016)

Shane Ross: This was specifically for storm flooding repairs. The allocations were made on that basis. This was not an extra allocation to improve roads willy nilly. It was for specific problems which arose as a result of the storms.

Select Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Estimates for Public Services 2016
Vote 31 - Transport, Tourism and Sport (Supplementary)
(7 Dec 2016)

Shane Ross: It is short of what is required. I agree with the Deputy. Under the capital plan the moneys are due to increase. I have now secured the first significant step towards restoring funding to a sustainable level in the medium term, particularly for the regional and local roads that the Deputy refers to. The capital expenditure on the regular maintenance of local and regional roads will...

Vote 31 - Transport, Tourism and Sport (Supplementary)
(7 Dec 2016)

Select Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Estimates for Public Services 2016
Vote 31 - Transport, Tourism and Sport (Supplementary)
(7 Dec 2016)

Shane Ross: That was what was requested. That was all Transport Infrastructure Ireland, TII, looked for and that is what it got. I was not going to give it more than it looked for. The capital plan will provide for the steady state situation. This was very specific. TII looked for €8 million and that is what it got.

Select Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Estimates for Public Services 2016
Vote 31 - Transport, Tourism and Sport (Supplementary)
(7 Dec 2016)

Shane Ross: I think 40% of the money has been given for preventative measures. The ratio is 60:40, with 60% for a response to what happened and 40% for preventative measures. We hope that it will not repeat itself because the preventative measures will be effective and there will not be such a crisis or a need for such large funds in the future. We cannot guarantee that, despite the weather today,...

Written Answers — Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport: Sports Events (7 Dec 2016)

Shane Ross: I am satisfied that hosting the 2023 Rugby World Cup would deliver significant economic, social and sporting benefits to Ireland. The direct economic return of hosting the tournament here would be primarily derived from the spending by overseas visitors.  Based on the outcome of the 2015 Rugby World Cup in England, there would be an estimated all-island positive economic impact...

Shane Ross: National Ports Policy provides that the five designated Ports of Regional Significance (Drogheda, Dún Laoghaire, Galway, New Ross and Wicklow) will be transferred to more appropriate local authority led governance structures. These five ports retain important roles as facilitators of their regional economies and, in some instances, as centres of marine-related amenity and tourism...
