- Seanad: Order of Business. (4 Mar 2008)
Paul Coghlan: I agree with the remarks of Senators Alex White, Déirdre de Búrca and David Norris on the Refugee Appeals Tribunal. We have suspected fishy business, so to speak, for quite a while and a number of decisions seemed rather questionable. Senator Norris has been strong on this matter and I have agreed with him. I support today's call for a debate on the matter with the Minister for Justice,...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (4 Mar 2008)
Paul Coghlan: Stealth taxes.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (4 Mar 2008)
Paul Coghlan: That is always appreciated.
- Seanad: Coast Guard Stations: Statements (Resumed). (27 Feb 2008)
Paul Coghlan: I welcome the Minister of State, Deputy Michael Ahern, to the House in the absence of the Minister, Deputy Noel Dempsey. The Minister of State has, with words clothed in reason's garb, endeavoured to make the worse appear the better reason. It is effectively a hatchet job for Valentia and Malin, with which no Senator on either side of the House accepts or agrees. We should be promoting...
- Seanad: Coast Guard Stations: Statements (Resumed). (27 Feb 2008)
Paul Coghlan: It would also be a reversal of what all Senators, on both sides of the House, subscribe to. It flies in the face of common sense to remove such highly-trained and skilled people from these locations when they are already working extremely effectively and harmoniously. Valentia and Malin Coast Guard stations have a long service record and are extremely busy. They have dealt very effectively...
- Seanad: Coast Guard Stations: Statements (Resumed). (27 Feb 2008)
Paul Coghlan: Go raibh maith agat. The idea of taking away such valuable employment in these two wonderful areas is totally unacceptable. I hope that today the Minister of State will get a feel for the all-party consensus which exists in this House on this vitally important issue. It will become clear that we unanimously consider these closures to be totally unacceptable. We look forward to hearing...
- Seanad: Coast Guard Stations: Statements (Resumed). (27 Feb 2008)
Paul Coghlan: I am winding up. I know this Minister of State as a reasonable man and I know he will faithfully report back the views of everyone in this House, which I believe are unanimous. I wish him well in doing so. The Minister of State's heart and head will be with us at the close of this debate.
- Seanad: Order of Business (27 Feb 2008)
Paul Coghlan: It is disgraceful that the Minister for Health and Children has sanctioned the behaviour of the HSE in its dealings with pharmacists. As democrats, all Members believe in dispute resolution procedures. Equally, we all subscribe to the view that it is not possible to do business in the absence of dialogue. At present, dialogue is not taking place and there has been a complete breakdown in...
- Seanad: Order of Business (27 Feb 2008)
Paul Coghlan: I had been of the impression that this issue formed part of the sub-programme for Government agreed with Deputy Healy-Rae and that he had obtained a commitment in respect of it. There is a great deal of reneging taking place and I would like to hear the Leader's comments on the matter.
- Seanad: Order of Business (27 Feb 2008)
Paul Coghlan: A lot of hot air.
- Seanad: State Property (26 Feb 2008)
Paul Coghlan: I thank the Minister of State at the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, Deputy Batt O'Keeffe, for taking this matter on the Adjournment. He will understand the issue because he spent many years in Killarney. That is why he has advanced to where he is. Killarney House is a State owned property of major historical interest and national importance. The historic...
- Seanad: State Property (26 Feb 2008)
Paul Coghlan: I am grateful to the Minister of State for his reply. Perhaps I read too much into last Friday's announcement. The Minister of State's response did not mention when the house will be opened, when all its rooms will be open to the public, when the various displays will be fully restored and when the interpretative centre for the national park will be up and running. No timescale has been...

- Seanad: State Property (26 Feb 2008)
Paul Coghlan: I accept the Minister of State's remarks.
- Seanad: Order of Business (26 Feb 2008)
Paul Coghlan: I hope it will be expanded.
- Seanad: Order of Business (26 Feb 2008)
Paul Coghlan: I am disappointed and saddened to note that the Health Service Executive is pressing ahead with plans to breach contracts and endanger vital frontline health care service to hundreds of communities throughout the land. That is no way to do business. It endangers patients and threatens many rural pharmacies.
- Seanad: Order of Business (26 Feb 2008)
Paul Coghlan: I join Senator de Búrca's call to invite the Minister for Health and Children to the House and add a request that the Minister address this issue because we have not heard about it and we should not let the matter drift any further. I welcome the announcement made in Kerry last Friday. The Leader perhaps knows more than I about it and if so I would welcome his comments. Deputy Jackie Healy...
- Seanad: Order of Business (26 Feb 2008)
Paul Coghlan: No. This could be a sub-part of the programme for Government and I would like to hear the Leader's comments on the funding he stated has been secured for Killarney House. The house is a major historic property of national interest that has been much neglected. I thank the Cathaoirleach for including my matter on the Adjournment when I look forward to hearing the Minister for the...

- Seanad: Order of Business (21 Feb 2008)
