National Asset Management Agency Bill 2009: Report Stage (Resumed) and Final Stage (5 Nov 2009)

National Asset Management Agency Bill 2009: Report Stage (Resumed) and Final Stage (5 Nov 2009)

Arthur Morgan: I am doing that. However, I must point this out to contextualise it. Otherwise, people will not understand what we are talking about, which would be unfortunate - not new, but unfortunate. Amendment No. 16 is linked to amendment No. 85. What we need to do in this regard is deal with the issue of long-term economic value. I had to try to define this nonsense of long-term economic value...

National Asset Management Agency Bill 2009: Report Stage (4 Nov 2009)

Arthur Morgan: We all know that the purpose of this Bill is, in the Government's view, to fix the banking system and to get it back to some kind of an even keel. We all understand the need for a functioning banking system. I would submit that the best way of doing so would be to create a State bank. The problem with the Government's policy on the whole banking issue is that it is ignoring the broader...

National Management Agency Bill 2009: Report Stage (Resumed) (4 Nov 2009)

Arthur Morgan: I support amendment No. 5, in particular, although I note the Minister has tabled a similar one. There is NAMA for the bankers and for the speculators and I suppose what we have here is barely crumbs from the master's table for ordinary people. It is unfortunate that we cannot strengthen this Bill in some way to deal more forcefully with the issues affecting real people.
