Seanad: Air Navigation and Transport Bill 2020: Report and Final Stages (9 Nov 2022)

Gerard Craughwell: Perhaps the Minister of State will clarify a point. Paragraph (a) reads, "specify the organisations invited to participate in the Forum, which shall include recognised aviation stakeholder groups, recognised aviation trade unions and representative bodies, certified aviation organisations and other interested parties,". When the Minister of State specifies the groups that are participating...

Seanad: Air Navigation and Transport Bill 2020: Report and Final Stages (9 Nov 2022)

Gerard Craughwell: I second the amendment.

Seanad: Air Navigation and Transport Bill 2020: Report and Final Stages (9 Nov 2022)

Gerard Craughwell: I totally support my colleague, Senator Doherty, on this. I would be extremely uncomfortable when the IAA appointing its own chairperson. This amendment makes perfect sense and would make for a far more democratic organisation from the outset. In light of the fact that the Minister of State will have to go back to Dáil Éireann with this Bill anyway because of the amendments that...

Seanad: Air Navigation and Transport Bill 2020: Report and Final Stages (9 Nov 2022)

Gerard Craughwell: I second the amendment.

Seanad: Air Navigation and Transport Bill 2020: Report and Final Stages (9 Nov 2022)

Gerard Craughwell: I second the amendment. We have discussed this and thrashed it out in the House about the licenceholders' forum. The important thing is that there is what I would call a mean and keen group of people who have a common interest and the fog is being taken out of the committee. The stakeholders forum will include all sorts of people who have no role whatsoever in developing a licenceholders'...

Seanad: Air Navigation and Transport Bill 2020: Report and Final Stages (9 Nov 2022)

Gerard Craughwell: I second the amendment.

Seanad: Air Navigation and Transport Bill 2020: Report and Final Stages (9 Nov 2022)

Gerard Craughwell: Quite apart from contact with IALPA and individual pilots making contact with me, what has driven the debate over the past two and a half years is the Rescue 116 incident. Perhaps if legislation had been in place alongside greater oversight, more engagement and a management willing to listen to its employees, things might have been highlighted sooner. In the report on Rescue 116, we find...

Seanad: Air Navigation and Transport Bill 2020: Report and Final Stages (9 Nov 2022)

Gerard Craughwell: I would like to acknowledge the officials who sit here for hours and hours on end, providing briefs to Ministers, listening to what has been said and bringing that back to their Department. That is how amendments get made and brought here. I would like to acknowledge their presence here and thank them for the work they do. It would be remiss of me not to thank the Irish Air Line Pilots'...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (8 Nov 2022)

Gerard Craughwell: On 12 July, in the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defence, I asked the Minister, Deputy Coveney, if the constitutionality of overflights by the RAF had ever been considered by the Cabinet. The Minister, Deputy Coveney, replied that “We do not have overflight arrangements with the RAF, to be clear.”Yesterday afternoon in the House of Commons, following a...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (8 Nov 2022)

Gerard Craughwell: With all due respect, it is fairly clear.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence: Humanitarian Situation in Ukraine: Members of the Ukrainian Parliament (8 Nov 2022)

Gerard Craughwell: I acknowledge the presence of the ambassador. For people following the meeting in Ukraine, you have an ambassador and staff in Dublin who work extremely hard for displaced citizens who arrive in this country, many of whom I have met. The Chairman adverted to the issue of generators. The Russians have clearly targeted electricity, gas and water infrastructure in particular. In high-rise...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Provision of Bus Services in Dublin: Discussion (8 Nov 2022)

Gerard Craughwell: On the issue of fines, unless I misheard, some €1.8 million has been collected in fines from both organisations. For the life of me, I cannot understand what that achieves. I know there must be some sanction, but I cannot understand what it achieves. Dublin Bus will come to the Exchequer looking for the money it is short at the end of the year. I do not know what Go-Ahead Ireland...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Provision of Bus Services in Dublin: Discussion (8 Nov 2022)

Gerard Craughwell: I will stop Mr. Edwards because I have limited time. Ms Graham should note that if Go-Ahead Ireland cannot meet the requirements of the local area we need a contractor that can. It is as simple as that. We cannot have a situation where people are standing at bus-stops waiting for buses in poor weather half way up the Dublin mountains. It is simply not good enough. Moreover, while I do...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Provision of Bus Services in Dublin: Discussion (8 Nov 2022)

Gerard Craughwell: I will, but it is worth pointing out that I am a member of the committee.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Provision of Bus Services in Dublin: Discussion (8 Nov 2022)

Gerard Craughwell: I am jumping the queue in fairness because I have a meeting with the Minister.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Provision of Bus Services in Dublin: Discussion (8 Nov 2022)

Gerard Craughwell: The bottom line is that I cannot have this situation. I do not get involved in local issues as much as I can avoid it. I am a national politician but we really must do something about it. At the next meeting, we will have a lot more research into it.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Provision of Bus Services in Dublin: Discussion (8 Nov 2022)

Gerard Craughwell: Can I say one final thing?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Provision of Bus Services in Dublin: Discussion (8 Nov 2022)

Gerard Craughwell: As a former leader of a trade union, it is my experience that companies retain employees with good terms and conditions of employment. The current demand for heavy goods vehicles, HGV, drivers throughout Europe is massive. If a company cannot retain the people it has, it must look at its terms and conditions of employment and start paying them what they are worth.
