Seanad: Order of Business (22 Nov 2017)

Terry Leyden: Yes. We must all try to do something about the homeless situation. I suggest that prize bonds are renamed the housing prize bonds as it would encourage people to invest their money. People feel very helpless because as many as 3,000 children and their families are without a home in this capital. The National Treasury Management Agency has shown little innovation. Where has it looked...

Seanad: Order of Business (22 Nov 2017)

Terry Leyden: I thank the Leader very much.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Public Sector Standards Bill 2015: Engagement with AILG and LAMA (21 Nov 2017)

Terry Leyden: I welcome the councillors and their colleagues. We make declarations every year, although my circumstances do not change from year to year. I would love to see a simple form that asks whether anything has changed in a person's circumstances from the commencement of their time as a councillor. That would be logical. If a person has bought or sold land, for example, he or she should include...

Seanad: Order of Business (21 Nov 2017)

Terry Leyden: I wish to refer to a meeting of the General Affairs Council in Brussels yesterday when unfortunately Ireland lost out to Paris in the decision on the relocation of the European Banking Authority with 167 staff from London, arising from the United Kingdom's decision to exit the European Union in March 2019. It was a great achievement on the part of all those concerned for us to go ahead of...

Seanad: Order of Business (21 Nov 2017)

Terry Leyden: No, I did not. I will say no more. The drawing of lots does not seem a fair way to decide the fate of those 167 staff. Luck was not with us on the day. We did not have the luck of the Irish or the four-leaved clover in Brussels yesterday. The benefits to Ireland, which would have accrued, would have been enormous in attracting financial services from London, but we must still pursue that...

Seanad: Order of Business (21 Nov 2017)

Terry Leyden: -----because carelessness was not the part of the role played, carelessness was not involved. Every effort was made and our diplomats throughout the world deserve credit. We fought them all and we won, and the Minister and the Taoiseach-----

Seanad: Order of Business (21 Nov 2017)

Terry Leyden: We won when we were up against the strength of Frankfurt. In the circumstances all we can do is say we did not pull the winner on the day, it did not come out of the bag for us. There was a drawing of lots but that is not the way to do this. We should intensify our efforts now to attract banks from the United Kingdom to Ireland. As Senator Feighan said, they tried to shoot us in the foot...

Seanad: Order of Business (21 Nov 2017)

Terry Leyden: It is a very poor job actually.

Seanad: Order of Business (16 Nov 2017)

Terry Leyden: It is crying over spilt milk at this stage as far as the Rugby World Cup is concerned. Quite frankly, they made a bags of it. Let us call a spade a spade.

Seanad: Order of Business (16 Nov 2017)

Terry Leyden: There was an inability to negotiate. The Taoiseach was not able to negotiate.

Seanad: Order of Business (16 Nov 2017)

Terry Leyden: The Minister, Deputy Ross, was more concerned about North Korea.

Seanad: Order of Business (16 Nov 2017)

Terry Leyden: I will tell the Senator one thing. When we were in power we could negotiate for world events.

Seanad: Order of Business (16 Nov 2017)

Terry Leyden: I would not lose the Scottish connections. I would not lose the Scottish vote and I would not lose the Welsh vote. Where were they going? What kind of amateurs are they sending? Give me a break. They could not negotiate a piss-up in a brewery.

Seanad: Order of Business (16 Nov 2017)

Terry Leyden: Whether it is rugby, soccer, or football, I am not concerned. As long as it is held in Ireland I am happy.

Seanad: Order of Business (16 Nov 2017)

Terry Leyden: I will withdraw my earlier remark, a Chathaoirligh, but it explains their inability to win friends and influence people.

Seanad: Order of Business (16 Nov 2017)

Terry Leyden: Circumstances may not allow me to appear here later today.

Seanad: Order of Business (16 Nov 2017)

Terry Leyden: Timing is impeccable but in this case it is not too impeccable-----

Seanad: Order of Business (16 Nov 2017)

Terry Leyden: The circular-----

Seanad: Order of Business (16 Nov 2017)

Terry Leyden: The circular from Deputy Phelan of 5 November is being rejected by councils throughout the country. It is a disgrace and people are so disappointed. If the Leader of this House is facing the councils next time I am putting a warning to him now. He will be run from every council's door unless he does something about these expenses and costs. Councillors are not getting the minimum wage....

Seanad: Order of Business (16 Nov 2017)

Terry Leyden: That is not being recognised. It is about time now that we recognised them and not come around with this type of circular, which is an insult. It has been written by civil servants and not by politicians. It is time the Leader rewrote these expenses proposals. They will be rejected.
