Denis O'Donovan: Right.

Seanad: Access to Central Treasury Funds (Commission for Energy Regulation) Bill 2011: Second Stage (Resumed) (26 Oct 2011)

Denis O'Donovan: As Senator Rónán Mullen is not present, perhaps it might be inappropriate for the Minister to continue in this vein. The matter should be raised in another venue.

Seanad: Access to Central Treasury Funds (Commission for Energy Regulation) Bill 2011: Second Stage (Resumed) (26 Oct 2011)

Denis O'Donovan: I am not siding with Senator Rónán Mullen; I am just saying he should be present to hear these remarks. I am trying to be fair as Leas-Chathaoirleach. As the Senator raised the issue, rightly or wrongly, he should be present when the Minister is making such an emphatic reply which he, in turn, may be right to make. Perhaps the matter can be dealt with in another way.

Seanad: Gender-Based Violence: Motion (26 Oct 2011)

Denis O'Donovan: I support the motion tabled by Senator Mullen and congratulate him on raising this very important issue. Without being party-political, I must state that it is a very serious issue that is having a major impact in countries such as China and India. It is important that we, as a branch of the Oireachtas, express our deep concern over the issues at play. From time to time, this House condemns...

Seanad: Garda Stations (25 Oct 2011)

Denis O'Donovan: This motion, with regard to Kilbrittain Garda station, speaks for itself. A review of many rural Garda stations is being conducted by the Department of Justice and Equality. Kilbrittain Garda station has been earmarked as possibly being one of the 200 rural stations which may very well close. This issue has come to the attention of the public in west Cork and meetings have been held....

Seanad: Garda Stations (25 Oct 2011)

Denis O'Donovan: I concur with the Minister of State in conveying the sympathies of this side of the House on the regrettable tragedy that occurred in Wicklow last night where, in the course of his civic responsibility to help others, a very young off-duty garda was lost. As somebody with huge respect for the gardaí and with family members in the force I concur with the Minister of State in this regard. I...

Seanad: Order of Business (25 Oct 2011)

Denis O'Donovan: I will try to be balanced in my response in support of the proposal to amend the Order of Business made by Senator Darragh O'Brien. It is my experience in various constituencies that 80% of people do not know what the referendum on increasing the powers of the Oireachtas is about. The referendum on judges' pay is fairly clear. While it is easy to blame the Referendum Commission for the...
