Seanad: Road Safety: Motion. (14 May 2003)

Timmy Dooley: The Senator discussed the infrastructural needs of the State, a subject which we would be happy to debate. I am sure the Government Whip would be happy to arrange such a debate to allow Senator Bannon express his opinions on that matter. Tonight we are talking about penalty points.

Seanad: Road Safety: Motion. (14 May 2003)

Timmy Dooley: I am sorry that the truth is continuing to irritate the Opposition. When these Members enter the real world, I am sure they will accept that the Minister has been doing a fantastic job. Indeed, he pointed out that there are elements of it which need to be completed. We must accept that what has been achieved is fundamentally sound. Lives have been saved. Obviously, we want to see more lives...

Seanad: Road Safety: Motion. (14 May 2003)

Timmy Dooley: Certainly not.

Seanad: Road Safety: Motion. (14 May 2003)

Timmy Dooley: I thank the Cathaoirleach. I appreciate the extra time. Senator Brian Hayes took issue with Senator Ross. I am delighted that Senator Ross gave such wholehearted support to the Government and the Minister.

Seanad: Road Safety: Motion. (14 May 2003)

Timmy Dooley: It obviously upset Senator Brian Hayes because he castigated Senator Ross and wanted to talk about the economy. We could have a debate on the management of the economy going back over a number of years.

Seanad: Road Safety: Motion. (14 May 2003)

Timmy Dooley: We will go back to 1987 if the Senator wants, when the country was bankrupt.

Seanad: Road Safety: Motion. (14 May 2003)

Timmy Dooley: Charlie Haughey was Taoiseach and Ray MacSharry was Minister for Finance.

Seanad: Road Safety: Motion. (14 May 2003)

Timmy Dooley: I accept that. It is worth pointing this out to those who have strayed from the motion in order to allow them to understand the efforts of the Government and those of previous Fianna Fáil Administrations. I am sure we will be in a position to have that debate. I could go on, but I will not do so. I thank the Cathaoirleach for the latitude he has provided. Amendment put. Tá

Seanad: Order of Business. (13 May 2003)

Timmy Dooley: Kilkenny has got its cup.

Seanad: Order of Business. (16 Apr 2003)

Timmy Dooley: Will the Leader request the Minister for Transport to come to the House as soon as possible to discuss the issues surrounding the future ownership of the State airports? There is considerable concern, certainly in my region, County Clare, about the future ownership structure of Shannon Airport. There is uncertainty among staff, business and tourism interests in the area. A debate on the...

Seanad: Cancer Treatment Services: Statements (Resumed). (16 Apr 2003)

Timmy Dooley: I join my colleagues in welcoming the Minister of State to the House and in recognising the excellent work which he, and the Minister, Deputy Martin, are doing in this area. There is no doubt that health generally, and particularly cancer, is an emotive area for very obvious reasons. When people are diagnosed, or presented with a terminal diagnosis, it can be quite difficult for them to...

Seanad: Central Mental Hospital: Motion. (16 Apr 2003)

Timmy Dooley: I join with my colleagues in welcoming the Minister of State to the House. He has been here on a number of occasions and his willingness to make himself available is welcome. I support the courageous initiative he has undertaken and on which action has been needed for a long time. The Office of Public Works has a considerable asset bank. At a time when it is essential to ensure that all...

Seanad: Central Mental Hospital: Motion. (16 Apr 2003)

Timmy Dooley: In my constituency, there are many Garda stations in need of repair. That has come about over a period of time, particularly in some outlying areas where gardaí are no longer resident in local stations but use them as office space. Some stations are in poor condition. Just as in the case of schools, which have been the subject of much discussion, there are also Garda stations in immediate...

Seanad: Central Mental Hospital: Motion. (16 Apr 2003)

Timmy Dooley: I understand it has been reviewed in recent times. There is a need to ensure that it is provided. Despite the fact that people in the facility do not have friends, as legislators, it is incumbent on us not to see ourselves legislating only for those who have their freedom. It has more to do with the people who need our assistance. The dignity and quality of their lives is of importance to us...

Seanad: Order of Business. (15 Apr 2003)

Timmy Dooley: I would also welcome a debate on this issue. Senator Ross and others have raised this matter with the Leader on a number of occasions in recent months and we have had to listen to offensive remarks about a profession, the majority of the members of which act exceptionally well and do a fine job on behalf of many people. It is unfair to allow this slating of auctioneers on an ongoing basis. We...

Seanad: Data Protection (Amendment) Bill 2002 [ Seanad Bill amended by the Dáil ] : Report and Final Stages. (3 Apr 2003)

Timmy Dooley: I join the other Senators in welcoming the Minister to the House. I support the amendments. As Senator Brian Hayes has said, it is great to see concerns raised in the last Seanad, of which many of us were not Members, addressed by the Minister and the Department, and finding their way into this Bill through the other House. These amendments further strengthen the legislation underpinning the...

Seanad: Data Protection (Amendment) Bill 2002 [ Seanad Bill amended by the Dáil ] : Report and Final Stages. (3 Apr 2003)

Timmy Dooley: Certainly not. As Senator Hayes knows, we consider all legislation carefully. The extent of consultation has been such that the views expressed have found their way into the legislation. In the case of certain Bills which we may not be able to guide through in the final stages of our term, we would hope that an incoming Government would be kind enough to ensure that our concerns were taken on...

Seanad: Data Protection (Amendment) Bill 2002 [ Seanad Bill amended by the Dáil ] : Report and Final Stages. (3 Apr 2003)

Timmy Dooley: Now. Question, "That the Bill do now pass," put and agreed to. Sitting suspended at 12.45 p.m. and resumed at 1 p.m.

Seanad: Crime Levels: Statements. (3 Apr 2003)

Timmy Dooley: The Senator should move on.

Seanad: Crime Levels: Statements. (3 Apr 2003)
