Written Answers — Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport: Bus Services (24 Jan 2017)

Shane Ross: I refer the Deputy to my reply of the 19th January 2017 to Dáil Question No. 289 regarding the development of a bus rapid transit scheme on the Swords/Airport/City Centre corridor.

Shane Ross: Nobody was there. Nobody turned up on that day.

Topical Issue Debate: Bus Éireann Services (19 Jan 2017)

Shane Ross: Not a single Fianna Fáil Member was at the meeting, yet they are very concerned today. The Deputy did not turn up.

Topical Issue Debate: Bus Éireann Services (19 Jan 2017)

Shane Ross: Not one substitute was at the meeting. Not one member of Deputy Troy's party was there. He did not show up.

Shane Ross: Nobody turned up. There was no substitute.

Topical Issue Debate: Bus Éireann Services (19 Jan 2017)

Shane Ross: I thank the Deputy for raising this very important issue. I agree with a great deal of what Deputy Calleary said. The need for respect on all sides, including among employers, employees and all other stakeholders, is absolutely imperative in this very delicate situation. It would be a pity if it were exploited for political advantage when so many people need protection in this threatening...

Topical Issue Debate: Bus Éireann Services (19 Jan 2017)

Shane Ross: That is fine.

Topical Issue Debate: Bus Éireann Services (19 Jan 2017)

Shane Ross: I thank both Deputies for their responses. In answer to Deputy Calleary, I note that the protection of rural communities is a matter on which the NTA has made a statement which is clearly supported by all Members in the House. The NTA says that if rural communities are adversely affected, or indeed any community is affected, it will move in as it has done in the past and ensure and...

Topical Issue Debate: Bus Éireann Services (19 Jan 2017)

Shane Ross: Let me get back to the report.

Topical Issue Debate: Bus Éireann Services (19 Jan 2017)

Shane Ross: I am trying to answer the question Deputy Troy asked. The report he so kindly put in my pigeon hole is an interesting document. It has on the top of it a very significant word - "draft". It also has another thing in it, which is the date of 30 November. This report was seven weeks old.

Topical Issue Debate: Bus Éireann Services (19 Jan 2017)

Shane Ross: This is why the Deputy should not exaggerate in respect of issues of this sort. It goes on to state, "This version of the report is a draft. Its contents and subject matter remain under review and its contents may change and be expanded as part of the finalisation of the report".

Topical Issue Debate: Bus Éireann Services (19 Jan 2017)

Shane Ross: We have to see how many reports have been issued.

Topical Issue Debate: Bus Éireann Services (19 Jan 2017)

Shane Ross: I have ten seconds. It is good to see Deputy Troy here today. It is a pity that on 7 December he could not turn up to the joint committee with this draft after it was written.

Written Answers — Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport: Public Transport (19 Jan 2017)

Shane Ross: Dáil Éireann voted to provide for the regulation of rickshaws, by way of an Amendment proposed by Deputy Imelda Munster, during its consideration of the Road Traffic  Bill 2016, now the Road Traffic Act 2016. I subsequently explained to the Seanad during that House's consideration of the Dáil amendments to the Bill, that I would need to take...

Written Answers — Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport: Rural Transport Programme Funding (19 Jan 2017)

Shane Ross: The group referred to by the Deputy has recently sought a meeting to discuss a number of issues and my office will be in touch with the group in due course. Budget 2017 provided for a €2.19 million increase in funding for the Rural Transport Programme (RTP) this year, which is part of the overall increase of €31 million for public transport services in...

Written Answers — Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport: Local Improvement Scheme (19 Jan 2017)

Shane Ross: The improvement and maintenance of regional and local roads is the statutory responsibility of the local authority, in accordance with the provisions of Section 13 of the Roads Act 1993. Works on those roads are funded from the local authority's own resources supplemented by State road grants.  The initial selection and prioritisation of works to be funded is also a matter for...

Written Answers — Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport: Motor Insurance (19 Jan 2017)

Shane Ross: I am acutely aware that the rising costs of motor insurance for drivers generally are also affecting the taxi industry. There are reports of large increases for existing policy holders and difficulties in obtaining insurance for new operators. The implications of the current insurance difficulties faced by those in the taxi sector are of concern to me and the Government. These...

Written Answers — Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport: Bus Éireann (19 Jan 2017)

Shane Ross: As the Deputy is aware, Bus Éireann is developing plans to address its financial position. The Company is currently loss-making and these losses are not sustainable. The Deputy may recall that a few months ago, the Chairman of Bus Éireann announced that the Board had commissioned a firm of consultants, Grant Thornton, to review proposals for Bus Éireann which the...

Written Answers — Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport: Driver Licences Renewals (19 Jan 2017)

Shane Ross: There are two possible scenarios, depending on the circumstances. Under EU law, Member States issue driving licences to people normally resident in their territory.  If an Irish driving licence holder takes up residence in another jurisdiction, they cannot renew their Irish driving licence. However, if a person remains normally resident in Ireland but is temporarily...

Written Answers — Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport: Bus Éireann (19 Jan 2017)

Shane Ross: I am unsure as regards the base year or precise methodology upon which the Deputy is calculating his ratios and in the context of 2016 population and subsidy levels would  question whether the Deputy's statement reflects the current position. Irrespective of that, I have previously stated that accurately benchmarking the level of subsidy paid to transport operators can be a...
