Finance (Local Property Tax) (Amendment) Bill 2013: Second Stage (1 Mar 2013)

Dara Calleary: I welcome the opportunity to contribute to the debate on the Bill. I wish to pick up where Deputy Paschal Donohoe left off by stating it is hugely important that there be clarity in respect of the social housing sector. This matter reflects the difficulty regarding the manner in which Second Stage is being rammed through today. The clarity being sought in respect of the relevant sections...

Finance (Local Property Tax) (Amendment) Bill 2013: Second Stage (1 Mar 2013)

Dara Calleary: That is not the case. The Minister of State should be serious. As a result of the Government's policies, people are going to be obliged to pay for water and litter removal.

Finance (Local Property Tax) (Amendment) Bill 2013: Second Stage (1 Mar 2013)

Dara Calleary: In rural areas street lights are not provided and there is a lack of decent roads. Citizens want to be shown what they will receive in return for paying the tax. Electoral (Amendment) (Dáil Constituencies) Bill 2012: Report and Final Stages (28 Feb 2013)

Dara Calleary: I am happy to support Deputy Ó Cuív's amendment. The Minister made an aside that we were happy to go in with Galway. We are not. This is a serious point. I know we accept an independent report and reports of the Constituency Commission have over the years been completely accepted. Perhaps it is time to look at that process and perhaps there should be a draft report. Never mind...

Public Health (Tobacco) (Amendment) Bill 2013: Report and Final Stages (28 Feb 2013)

Dara Calleary: I commend the Minister, his officials and everybody involved in the production of this legislation. The Minister touched on a number of issues, including the need for us to be more adaptable in order to keep ahead of the tobacco companies and the way in which they are marketing. The new package is just an example of what measures they are resorting to in order to try to tackle this kind of...

Order of Business (28 Feb 2013)

Dara Calleary: The proposal for tomorrow involves legislation on the property tax. In order to allow Government Deputies to go home for the weekend it is proposed that we vote on it next Tuesday. Either we have a proper Friday sitting or we do not.

Order of Business (28 Feb 2013)

Dara Calleary: Let us cut out the messing. We will not have an Order of Business tomorrow, we will be having a debate on a Bill that will cost families a lot of money and we will then try to vote on it next Tuesday. We are either serious about Dáil reform or we are not. This charade of sitting tomorrow undermines any intent towards Dáil reform and the seriousness of this House.
