Jerry Buttimer: -----on the creation of the committee and we will have-----

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Mar 2017)

Jerry Buttimer: We will have the debate on the completion of the committee report and the Senator will have an opportunity to contribute. I am sure there will be lots of water poured over and under the bridge by then. Senator Byrne raised the issue of CAO nursing applications and she is correct that the number of people applying to study nursing is an issue. I hope the Minister for Health in his talks...

Jerry Buttimer: I move:That the Order of the Seanad of 24th November, 2016, relating to the Joint Committee on the Future Funding of Domestic Water Services is amended in paragraph (h) by the deletion of '28th February, 2017, or within three months of its first public meeting, whichever is the later' and the substitution therefore of '14th April, 2017'.

Seanad: Business of Seanad (9 Mar 2017)

Jerry Buttimer: I apologise to Members of the House. There is a voting block in the Dáil so the Minister of State dealing with the next business cannot leave. I propose we suspend until 3 p.m.

Seanad: Business of Seanad (9 Mar 2017)

Jerry Buttimer: I propose that we suspend until the conclusion of the voting time in the Dáil.

Committee on Public Petitions: Business of Joint Committee (8 Mar 2017)

Jerry Buttimer: Apologies have also been received from Senator Diarmuid Wilson.

Committee on Public Petitions: Promoting Awareness of the Public Petitions Process: Discussion (8 Mar 2017)

Jerry Buttimer: I welcome all the representatives and thank them for their presentation and for being here. The citizens information website and the way it portrays the Committee on Public Petitions is to be commended because it is quite clear on what is asked of the petitioner. Do the witnesses think that we should make our language more easy to follow, less cumbersome and less inhibiting for those who...

Committee on Public Petitions: Promoting Awareness of the Public Petitions Process: Discussion (8 Mar 2017)

Jerry Buttimer: Can I be excused? I have another meeting to go to. My apologies, I have to leave.

Jerry Buttimer: The Order of Business on International Women's Day, 8 March 2017, is-----

Seanad: Order of Business (8 Mar 2017)

Jerry Buttimer: The race to populism never ceases to amaze me.

Seanad: Order of Business (8 Mar 2017)

Jerry Buttimer: The Order of Business is No. 1, statements on Seachtain na Gaeilge, to be taken at 12.45 p.m. and conclude not later than 2.15 p.m., with the contributions of group spokespersons not to exceed eight minutes each and those of all other Senators not to exceed five minutes each and the Minister to be called on to reply to the debate not later than 2.10 p.m.; and No. 3, Sea-Fisheries (Amendment)...

Seanad: Order of Business (8 Mar 2017)

Jerry Buttimer: I dtús báire, ar mo shon féin agus ar son an Tí ba mhaith liom mo chombhrón a ghabháil do na clanna tar éis bás na mná agus na leanaí maidin inniu i Cluain Dolcáin. It is important that Senators send their sympathies to the families of the mother and two young children who were tragically killed this morning in Clondalkin. It is awful...

Seanad: Order of Business (8 Mar 2017)

Jerry Buttimer: -----to celebrate the historic achievements of women around the world in sport, civic life, arts, culture, music and other spheres. It is important that we recognise and pay tribute to women. It is a pity that we do not have the first female President of the US. That would have shattered a glass ceiling. We saw what Presidents Robinson and McAleese did in Ireland. We have seen what many...

Seanad: Order of Business (8 Mar 2017)

Jerry Buttimer: While I do not wish to strike a discordant note, the facts are facts, but the Senator can have alternative facts, if she so wishes. It is important to indicate that the Government is doing work.

Seanad: Order of Business (8 Mar 2017)

Jerry Buttimer: The Government is doing work.

Seanad: Order of Business (8 Mar 2017)

Jerry Buttimer: I also accept that the Government must play catch-up because funding was not provided in some areas during the worst recession in the history of the State. I will work with Senators to deliver in these areas, but they should not claim the Government is not doing anything when, to be fair, it is doing work.

Seanad: Order of Business (8 Mar 2017)

Jerry Buttimer: Senator Gerard P. Craughwell referred to Paddy Power, Betfair and the gambling Bill. I join him in calling for the introduction of legislation on online gambling, in particular. He is correct that gambling is a secret addiction which has shattered and ruined many lives. We must tackle the issue collectively rather than creating silos. It is frightening to note that profits of €1.5...

Seanad: Order of Business (8 Mar 2017)

Jerry Buttimer: I agree, but one cannot have megaphone diplomacy on the national broadcaster. Both sides should engage, discuss and reach a solution in talks to ensure a service will continue to be provided. Nobody wants a strike, which would not be in anyone's interests. I understand a strike has been proposed for next Wednesday.

Seanad: Order of Business (8 Mar 2017)

Jerry Buttimer: Both sides should engage in talks. Senator Joe O'Reilly referred to the misuse of alcohol at teenage discos. I know that the Senator has been proactive in his home area and the House on this matter. I was involved in a sports organisation which ran teenage discos. They were well policed by volunteers and no alcohol was consumed. However, it seems the phenomenon of pre-drinking has...

Seanad: Order of Business (8 Mar 2017)

Jerry Buttimer: Gender quotas have helped to bring more women into politics. Perhaps the Senator's assertion that some token women ran in the most recent general election is correct, but I hope that is not the case.
