Employment Rights (11 Jan 2012)

Seán Sherlock: I thank the Deputies for raising this issue. A number of points have been raised in each of the contributions. I thank the Deputies for raising this important matter and I thank the Ceann Comhairle for the opportunity to respond. I am concerned at the continuing situation at the Vita Cortex factory in Cork which has involved workers at the plant engaging in a sit-in since 16 December last...

Employment Rights (11 Jan 2012)

Seán Sherlock: The ultimate aim is to ensure that the rights of workers are vindicated. We all have that interest at heart. The second aim is to ensure that corporate social responsibility is adhered to and that there is some degree of corporate governance. I agree with the Deputies on the perceived Byzantine structures of Vita Cortex. We must also remember that Vita Cortex was a recipient of State...

Employment Rights (11 Jan 2012)

Seán Sherlock: I acknowledge the point made by Deputy Martin about the legal basis of NAMA's position. I will also bring that to the Minister.

Job Losses (11 Jan 2012)

Seán Sherlock: No one political entity in the House has a monopoly on the rights of workers. I spoke with regard to the Vita Cortex case, in which there is a serious breach of corporate social responsibility and corporate governance, and the same applies in respect of this case. There is no question but that the rights of workers have not been vindicated and have been trampled upon. Under legislation...

Job Losses (11 Jan 2012)

Seán Sherlock: I acknowledge the points made by the Deputies and I am not one to pay lip service to issues such as this. There is a perceived breach of legislation in respect of sections 9 and 10 of the...

Social Welfare Bill 2011: Second Stage (8 Dec 2011)

Seán Sherlock: The Government is attempting to create a necessary framework that seeks to reform and evolve the social protection code. I would like to address my comments to the budgetary measures introduced. If I stray from the exact contents of the Social Welfare Bill 2011, I do so because I want to comment on it in a wider context. We must consider the Social Welfare Bill 2011 in the wider budgetary...

European Summit: Motion (8 Dec 2011)

Seán Sherlock: It is essential that European leaders make and implement clear decisions quickly to prove our shared determination to protect our currency, support member states that are working towards economic recovery, and introduce strong rules to ensure fiscal discipline. Those are the words of the Taoiseach. A philosophical debate needs to take place within this House about the nature of our...

Seán Sherlock: Currently Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) is directly supporting approximately 3,000 researchers in Ireland's higher education institutions. The researchers in receipt of SFI grants are employed by the various higher education institutions. Consequently pension entitlements are a contractual matter between the individual researchers and their respective employers. Members of research teams...

Industrial Development (1 Dec 2011)

Seán Sherlock: I thank Deputy Troy for raising this matter. I have some sympathy for his position as I understand the frustration of any Deputy who represents areas outside of the large urban conurbations when it comes to attracting inward investment to their business parks. I too have had words with the agency when it comes to its policy of attracting inward investment to places other than the larger...

Industrial Development (1 Dec 2011)

Seán Sherlock: I have sympathy for the Deputy regarding the issues raised. If one considers this from the vantage point of companies that may invest inward, they do not necessarily look at county boundaries or constituencies and, therefore, if they are considering the midlands gateway, they will look at the towns, in particular, not the county boundaries.
