Questions on Proposed Legislation (7 Jul 2016)

Mary Lou McDonald: My question is on the Charities Act. In the media today we see that substantial moneys seem to have gone astray from, or been misused in, another charitable organisation, in this instance Carline, which supports teenagers. It seems that €161,000 is in question in respect of that organisation. This follows on the scandals around Console and St. John of God.

Leaders' Questions (7 Jul 2016)

Mary Lou McDonald: I am not seeking additional briefing. I am seeking answers. I am asking the State to change its course of action. The Government has an ex gratiascheme. It is instructive that it is ex gratiabecause, as the Minister concedes, it is a matter of denying liability. Let me tell the Minister about his scheme. Of the 210 victims the State bullied into dropping their cases of abuse, 15 have...

Leaders' Questions (7 Jul 2016)

Mary Lou McDonald: I am sure the Minister will recall the case of Louise O'Keeffe, who was only eight years old when she was abused by her primary school teacher in County Cork in the 1970s. As the Minister knows, she sought justice against the State and against the Department of Education and Skills. Her case was relentlessly contested by the State. She was pursued at every step. The State won in the...

Public Accounts Committee: Work Programme (7 Jul 2016)

Mary Lou McDonald: I am sorry, but, before he does that, let me make a couple of observations about how the committee might work. In the previous Dáil, particularly during its last year or so, I was concerned that obstacles were being put in the committee's way. In some instances, it may have been legitimate, but in others I considered it to be overly conservative and cautious and a little obstructionist...

Is it possible for the clerk of the committee to make contact with Mr. Fannin to clarify for him the position in respect of the PAC? Can we clarify for him where we are now in terms of what we can and cannot do, and what we might and might not do, in respect of his case?

Public Accounts Committee: Work Programme (7 Jul 2016)

Mary Lou McDonald: I understand it is a matter of legal proceedings. I simply ask that the committee engages with the man.
