- Select Committee on Social Protection: Estimates for Public Services 2019
Vote 37 - Employment Affairs and Social Protection (Revised) (27 Mar 2019) John Curran: It is causing difficulties for people who have a job and are trying to take time out for a period. It is mainly cases of elderly people having falls or strokes who cannot subsequently be discharged from a hospital or discharged to a nursing home. I have come across a number of such cases in the past year and I was surprised.

Vote 37 - Employment Affairs and Social Protection (Revised) (27 Mar 2019) John Curran: It is proving problematic for people who are working.
- Select Committee on Social Protection: Estimates for Public Services 2019
Vote 37 - Employment Affairs and Social Protection (Revised) (27 Mar 2019) John Curran: I have seen cases where people have had a stroke and are incapable of going home from hospital. Their discharge from hospital is delayed where the medical evidence would be very robust but the ability of the Department to process the medical evidence is the slowing factor. Something must be examined there.

- Select Committee on Social Protection: Estimates for Public Services 2019
Vote 37 - Employment Affairs and Social Protection (Revised) (27 Mar 2019) John Curran: Not everybody is in hospital. With the likes of Alzheimer's disease and dementia, there is not a day or time. It is not like a stroke. Certainly, I have seen last year, in particular, with benefit, a number of people who were hospitalised.

Vote 37 - Employment Affairs and Social Protection (Revised) (27 Mar 2019) John Curran: I am not suggesting that.
- Select Committee on Social Protection: Estimates for Public Services 2019
Vote 37 - Employment Affairs and Social Protection (Revised) (27 Mar 2019) John Curran: I have one or two other quick questions. The 2018 estimate for JobPath was €48 million and the outturn was €71 million. In her opening statement, the Minister indicated a significant drop in the live register yet the Estimate for 2019 is €57 million. While it is less than the outturn, it is still significantly more than the Estimate this time last year. Does the...
- Select Committee on Social Protection: Estimates for Public Services 2019
Vote 37 - Employment Affairs and Social Protection (Revised) (27 Mar 2019) John Curran: It is not proportionate to the drop in the live register. The live register, as the Minister stated, is down 75,000 over two years. My question was in that context.
- Select Committee on Social Protection: Estimates for Public Services 2019
Vote 37 - Employment Affairs and Social Protection (Revised) (27 Mar 2019) John Curran: I was taken by the Minister talking in her opening statement about those who remain unemployed, whether young or old. We are at a stage where the Minister rightly states there are jobs out there and it is more than merely equipping individuals. I accept that Deputy Regina Doherty is only the Minister for one Department and many of our solutions must be cross-departmental to be effective....

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: BusConnects: National Transport Authority (Resumed) (27 Mar 2019)
John Curran: I thank Ms Graham very much for her opening statement. I will follow the same sequence as Deputy Rock and start with MetroLink, another version of which was announced yesterday. We have seen many versions of it. If one adds the timelines set out in the opening statement, it would take in or around ten years to deliver the project. It is a long way down the road before it becomes...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: BusConnects: National Transport Authority (Resumed) (27 Mar 2019)
John Curran: It is very unusual for me to get agreement. Metro west was also part of the jigsaw because it was to link to metro north. The western part of Dublin is where the population growth is. We have two strategic development zones, SDZs, under physical construction as we speak, brand new towns with approximately 10,000 new housing units. The witnesses are sick and tired of hearing me say that...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: BusConnects: National Transport Authority (Resumed) (27 Mar 2019)
John Curran: The NTA has made a substantial change from the larger metro project to MetroLink. Will there be value for money versus the full scheme? It has cut 7 km but what is the cost benefit, how many potential passengers have been affected and so forth? It is not transparent or obvious.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: BusConnects: National Transport Authority (Resumed) (27 Mar 2019)
John Curran: Is Ms Graham suggesting there will be more options or that there will be shorter journey times?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: BusConnects: National Transport Authority (Resumed) (27 Mar 2019)
John Curran: That is where the real fear is. The fear is that in advance of having the bus corridors, the NTA will make all of these changes and people will not see the benefits. They buy them in the case of the bus corridors, but it should not be suggested to them that they go halfway into town, get off and get on the bus that coming from the other direction when they have probably already queued for...
