Public Accounts Committee: Business of Committee (26 Feb 2015)

Joe Costello: On the correspondence from the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht concerning the airstrips, could I request that we would get a further breakdown of the detail? A very considerable amount of money was spent. The feasibility study was conducted in 1997. Two airstrips were completed, one in Clifden and the other in Inisbofin, in 2009 and 2011, respectively. Another study was...

Public Accounts Committee: Business of Committee (26 Feb 2015)

Joe Costello: Could I raise another point? On the invitation we received from the National Library of Ireland, a number of us around the table visited yesterday to inspect the system and see the difficulties in the system. A large quantity of priceless documents are housed in circumstances that are unacceptable from an environmental point of view. If a problem arose and it involved paper, it would go up...

Public Accounts Committee: Business of Committee (26 Feb 2015)

Joe Costello: I agree with Deputy Mary Lou McDonald that we need to explore this further. There are serious questions to be asked about all the circumstances surrounding the HSBC offshore accounts. It is a live issue with Revenue at the moment and it would be valuable to explore it in further depth.

Public Accounts Committee: Business of Committee (26 Feb 2015)

Joe Costello: The week before last there was a police raid on HSBC offices in Switzerland relating to offshore accounts and various documents were taken. Can we get an update on that? It is still a live issue but it would be interesting to know whether any new documents have come into the public domain.

Children and Family Relationships Bill 2015: Second Stage (Resumed) (25 Feb 2015)

Joe Costello: I welcome the Minister to the House and I welcome the Children and Family Relationships Bill. It is, as she said, a very far-reaching Bill which puts children at the very heart of Irish family law. It is about time that happened. It reflects the reality of life in Ireland today. In the past there was a belief in an idealised version of the family. In reality, even if on the outside a...

Joe Costello: 532. To ask the Minister for Education and Skills if she will examine the conditions under which an honours degree allowance is awarded to teachers who qualified from Marino Institute of Education in 2012, if she will reconsider whether the requirement to be working on one specified date, which takes no account of any other work, is fair and reasonable in determining whether a teacher...

Topical Issue Debate: Aer Lingus Sale (18 Feb 2015)

Joe Costello: I thank the Minister for the clarification. He has observed that this is only in the form of a proposal as yet and that no firm formal offer is on the table. Nevertheless, if a deal was done with IAG, it appears that this would mean that it would no longer be possible for the Minister to make appointments, that the three nominees the State is entitled to appoint simply would fall as...

Topical Issue Debate: Aer Lingus Sale (18 Feb 2015)

Joe Costello: The CEO of the International Airlines Group, IAG, came before the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Transport and Communications last week. At the committee meeting and in public utterances he gave a cast iron guarantee that he would commit to certain undertakings for five years, particularly in respect of the Heathrow slots. He indicated that in the event of a takeover of Aer Lingus it would...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Proposed Sale of Aer Lingus: (Resumed) IAG (12 Feb 2015)

Joe Costello: I welcome Mr. Griffin and Mr. Walsh. What Mr. Walsh has to do today and in the coming days is to convince the Government and us to troop into the Dáil and vote to dispose of the 25.1% shareholding. When the privatisation took place in 2006-2007, there was a specific amendment put in place for a particular purpose, that is, to prevent the entire privatisation of Aer Lingus so that we...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Proposed Sale of Aer Lingus: (Resumed) IAG (12 Feb 2015)

Joe Costello: -----of the NTMA, which contains the NewERA company which has responsibility for the disposal of State assets. Is there not a certain degree of incompatibility in Mr. Walsh's role in seeking to buy out Aer Lingus in that respect? Third, Mr. Walsh is, I presume, a deferred pensioner. In recent times, the deferred pensioners have very considerable grievances about the manner in which they...
