- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Joint Meeting with Joint Committee on Disability Matters
Accessibility in the Built Environment, Information and Communication: Discussion (29 Sep 2022) Micheál Carrigy: On behalf of the Joint Committee on Autism, I thank the Chairman and other members of the Joint Committee on Disability Matters for proposing today's joint session of our committees on this important topic. Accessibility is at the core of the work of both of our committees. In our first public meeting, my committee called for Leinster House to be made autism friendly, as is the case in the...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Joint Meeting with Joint Committee on Disability Matters
Accessibility in the Built Environment, Information and Communication: Discussion (29 Sep 2022) Micheál Carrigy: I thank the witnesses. I was struck by what Mr. Harris said in his introduction about being equal, valued and accepted, and the use of the words "accessible" and "inclusive". That applies across all disabilities and it is what we have to strive for. Both committees have to make sure the Government puts the funding in place and makes changes to ensure we have a society like that. There was...

- Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Local Authorities (28 Sep 2022)
Micheál Carrigy: I welcome the Minister of State. My Commencement matter relates to the loss of commercial rates as a result of the closure of Lough Ree power station in Lanesborough in 2019, with which the Minister of State will be quite familiar. It has been a major blow to employment and local economic activity in the regions of County Longford, Offaly and Shannonbridge, which suffered a negative impact...
- Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Local Authorities (28 Sep 2022)
Micheál Carrigy: I thank the Minister of State for that commitment to funding but, as I stated, multi-annual funding is needed. I have to come in here every September and bring this issue to the fore in order for it to be announced that we are getting the funding. That is not acceptable. Mr. Kieran Mulvey, the just transition commissioner appointed by the Government, recommended that a multi-annual...
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Future of Musical Theatre Education in Ireland: Discussion (28 Sep 2022)
Micheál Carrigy: The witnesses are all very welcome. They will be speaking to the converted in my case as I am a lover of musicals. Any time I am lucky enough to be abroad, in London or wherever, I go to shows. I go to the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre whenever I get a chance. I am blessed to be from Longford. We have a fantastic stage school - the Evolution Stage School run by Paul Hennessy and Tracey...
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Future of Musical Theatre Education in Ireland: Discussion (28 Sep 2022)
Micheál Carrigy: My two takes from the contributions are that there is a need for additional places and increased opportunities to study through the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, and increased Arts Council funding for higher bursaries to give people an opportunity.
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Future of Musical Theatre Education in Ireland: Discussion (28 Sep 2022)
Micheál Carrigy: What reason was given?
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Future of Musical Theatre Education in Ireland: Discussion (28 Sep 2022)
Micheál Carrigy: I have one final question. I see on the screen a reference to Michael Collins: A Musical Drama. I had totally forgotten about that. What went wrong there? Michael Collinswas such a high-grossing film some 20 years ago and told a particularly Irish story. We are now in the decade of centenaries and the musical should have been supported. What went wrong that it did not happen?
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Future of Musical Theatre Education in Ireland: Discussion (28 Sep 2022)
Micheál Carrigy: I thank the Chair. I was at a meeting in the Backstage Theatre. It received a lot of funding for workshops throughout the Covid pandemic, whether for acting, music or theatre. It was beneficial. Both Senator Malcolm Byrne and I raised the issue of funding pantomimes last Christmas so that they could be put on. We set a precedent for supporting these shows and, therefore, we should expand...
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Future of Musical Theatre Education in Ireland: Discussion (28 Sep 2022)
Micheál Carrigy: Yes. I happened to be at a show recently and we had to leave due to the noise and sound. It is important that it is taken into account and advertised in advance for families and parents whenever a show is put on. I am delighted that Mr. Campbell is working on that.
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (27 Sep 2022)
Micheál Carrigy: I support Senator Kyne's proposal for the Minister for Health to come to the House to discuss staffing levels throughout the HSE. There is a particular issue within the disability teams throughout the country in regard to occupational therapy, speech and language therapy and the lack of qualified people coming out of the colleges to fill positions. It is an important issue. We are going to...
- Seanad: Budget 2023 (Finance): Statements (27 Sep 2022)
Micheál Carrigy: I welcome the Minister of State. I also welcome today's budget which is very fair and targeted. I compliment the Departments of Finance and Public Expenditure and Reform on their prudent management of the economy, which means we have the funding in place to deliver a budget today. Earlier today, the Minister cited the example of a single pensioner living alone in receipt of fuel allowance...
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (22 Sep 2022)
Micheál Carrigy: I want to raise a couple of issues on behalf of groups within my community. I welcome the recent announcement by the Minister for Rural and Community Development, Deputy Humphreys, of a community centres investment fund for the refurbishment and upgrading of much-needed community facilities across Ireland. A sum of €15 million has been set aside but I understand that applications...
- Seanad: School Transport: Motion (21 Sep 2022)
Micheál Carrigy: I welcome the Minister. I apologise for being late to the debate as I was at another meeting when the Minister was speaking. The reality is this whole issue is about children. It is not about concessionary or non-concessionary tickets but about children getting to school. We are in a situation where the country is at full employment. We need to be at full employment and we need people to...
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (20 Sep 2022)
Micheál Carrigy: I want to raise a few issues. The first concerns the HSE, and specifically the children's disability network teams. There is a crisis across our disability network teams. I will cite an example from my own county, which has a population of 45,000.In terms of posts filled, there is one psychologist, 0.5 in speech and language therapy, 0.5 in occupational therapy, 0.8 in physiotherapy and no...
