Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Broadcasting Sector (13 Jul 2023)

Brian Leddin: That is very good news. As I understand the Minister, the public will have an opportunity to contribute to the consultation on the Coimisiún na Meán code. With respect to advertising and regulation, we do this all the time and we have done it for very good reason, particularly in the area of public health and most notably with respect to regulating cigarettes and alcohol. There...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Broadcasting Sector (13 Jul 2023)

Brian Leddin: 58. To ask the Minister for Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht if the review of public service broadcasting will examine the role of advertising and programme sponsorship on influencing public opinion with respect to climate action; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [34707/23]

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Broadcasting Sector (13 Jul 2023)

Brian Leddin: Will the review of public service broadcasting examine the role of advertising and programme sponsorship on influencing public opinion with respect to climate change, and will the Minister make a statement on the matter?

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Animal Welfare (13 Jul 2023)

Brian Leddin: 11. To ask the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine what welfare measures have been taken in the greyhound sector in the past 12 months to satisfy the programme for Government commitment that State funding of the sector will be contingent on a guarantee of welfare standards being upheld on an annual basis. [34755/23]

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Animal Welfare (13 Jul 2023)

Brian Leddin: What welfare measures have been taken in the greyhound sector in the past 12 months, to satisfy the programme for Government commitment that State funding of the sector will be contingent on a guarantee of welfare standards being upheld annually?

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Animal Welfare (13 Jul 2023)

Brian Leddin: My fundamental question is to ask if the Minister is satisfied that the programme for Government commitment is being addressed. He shares the concerns of the public, to put it mildly, when it comes to the greyhound industry and what has been revealed in recent years. Greyhounds are killed annually because they are not fast enough to make it on the track. Dogs are being killed because they...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Animal Welfare (13 Jul 2023)

Brian Leddin: I thank the Minister for his answer. I appreciate that he takes the matter seriously, and ask that he continue to do so. It is of particular importance and concern to the public. I ask that he look at the independence of the animal welfare assessment regime. That also needs to be examined on an ongoing basis. The public needs to have confidence that any welfare assessment is independent....

Written Answers — Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Construction Industry (13 Jul 2023)

Brian Leddin: 17. To ask the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine what steps have been taken to establish an interdepartmental and industry working group on timber in construction; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [34756/23]

Written Answers — Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Renewable Energy Generation (12 Jul 2023)

Brian Leddin: 195. To ask the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine if the proposed trial on micro biodigesters has commenced; what supports are in place for micro biodigesters in Ireland; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [34562/23]

Committee on Budgetary Oversight: Summer Economic Statement 2023: Discussion (12 Jul 2023)

Brian Leddin: I welcome the Ministers today. It is great to have them before the committee. I congratulate both Ministers for their stewardship of the economy. While there are many challenges remaining, many of them are the challenges of success but there is a solid foundation, as they set out in the opening statement, to address many of those challenges. We have done a lot in the past few years and...

Committee on Budgetary Oversight: Summer Economic Statement 2023: Discussion (12 Jul 2023)

Brian Leddin: I was not alluding to programme for Government interpretations but I appreciate the Minister's point that there are commitments in that regard. I very much welcome his answer. I raise an issue with the Minister, Deputy McGrath, that I previously raised with the Minister, Deputy Donohoe, when he was in his former role. There is an objective in budgets to have a more targeted approach to...

Committee on Budgetary Oversight: Summer Economic Statement 2023: Discussion (12 Jul 2023)

Brian Leddin: We might look at grant support, much like what was given to taxi drivers. That is the way to do it. The challenge would be defining who makes up the eligible cohort and not opening a Pandora's box. I accept the difficulty in that but there is still a strong argument for introducing such a support. I do not expect the Minister to make a decision on it here and now.

Committee on Budgetary Oversight: Summer Economic Statement 2023: Discussion (12 Jul 2023)

Brian Leddin: I thank the Minister.

Progress on the National Parks and Wildlife Service: Statements (6 Jul 2023)

Brian Leddin: I am sharing time with Deputy Christopher O'Sullivan. The Ceann Comhairle has been around this House a lot longer than I have, but it is fair to say that what we saw last night was quite a rare and remarkable thing. We saw Members across the floor of this House come together and vote together, overwhelmingly, for the nature restoration law. That is something that needs to be acknowledged....

Written Answers — Department of Housing, Planning, and Local Government: Housing Policy (6 Jul 2023)

Brian Leddin: 86. To ask the Minister for Housing, Planning, and Local Government the progress on the commitment in Housing for All to implement a minimum building energy rating requirement for rental properties; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [33188/23]

Written Answers — Department of Housing, Planning, and Local Government: Legislative Measures (6 Jul 2023)

Brian Leddin: 102. To ask the Minister for Housing, Planning, and Local Government the progress of the legislation to allow for directly elected mayor with executive powers for Limerick; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [33189/23]

Nature Restoration Law: Motion [Private Members] (5 Jul 2023)

Brian Leddin: In my view, Deputy Fitzmaurice, whom I hold in very high esteem and who introduced this motion, represents his community and constituency very well. I can say the same for the cosponsors of the motion, Deputies McNamara and Harkin. However, with respect to them, I believe they are wrong with this motion. The nature restoration law is not the portent of doom that many portray it as; it is...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Ireland's Water Quality: Discussion (5 Jul 2023)

Brian Leddin: I welcome the witnesses. I was happy to hear Mr. Callanan refer to the importance of the science-led approach. I put on record my dismay at the comments of the president of the Irish Farmers Association, IFA, when he disregarded the report published last week and described it as nonsensical. That was unfair to the EPA and the scientists working in it because they are absolutely committed...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Ireland's Water Quality: Discussion (5 Jul 2023)

Brian Leddin: It is fair to say the Commission is probably at the end of its tether with Ireland and that is why we are where we are.
