Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Business of Joint Committee
Matters Relating to the Banking Sector: Ulster Bank
(19 Jun 2018)

Paddy Burke: On the lending issue, the witnesses say that the average refund due is less than €2,000. Does that take into account the hardship some people may have experienced as a result of overcharging by the bank? Some of those businesses might have gone into financial difficulties and went bust. Does this take all of that into account?

Matters Relating to the Banking Sector: Ulster Bank
(19 Jun 2018)

Paddy Burke: Have customers complained about the overcharging?

Seanad: Order of Business (13 Jun 2018)

Paddy Burke: I would like to be associated with the expressions of sympathy to the family of the late Rory Kiely who was a long-time Member of this House. He was really genuine, both as a Senator and a person. He was a great Cathaoirleach of this Chamber. He was also a great GAA man. I am sure he would love to see how the Limerick hurling team is performing. He would have loved to have seen Limerick...

Seanad: Planning and Development (Amendment) Bill 2016: Report Stage (Resumed) and Final Stage (13 Jun 2018)

Paddy Burke: I support the point made by Senator John O'Mahony about the vacant site tax. I agree with him that in some towns there are lands that could be developed. Unfortunately, there is an oversupply of houses. Therefore, if there are lands that should be or could be developed, no bank manager in his or her right mind would give funds to develop them, given the oversupply of houses. Where does...

Seanad: Local Property Tax: Motion (30 May 2018)

Paddy Burke: I welcome the Minister of State to the House. I thank Senator Horkan and the Fianna Fáil Senators for putting this motion forward. It is a good motion. It allows debate to take place on this issue on which an ongoing review will be completed later this year. It is a good motion in the sense-----

Seanad: Local Property Tax: Motion (30 May 2018)

Paddy Burke: The Senator should not be.

Seanad: Local Property Tax: Motion (30 May 2018)

Paddy Burke: He has a fantastic home.

Seanad: Local Property Tax: Motion (30 May 2018)

Paddy Burke: The motion raises many issues. I hope the review of the local property tax will take account of some of the issues raised. My colleague from Mayo, Senator Michelle Mulherin, has raised this issue on many occasions at our parliamentary party meetings and in the House. She proposed a system where the starting point would be the rate at which the local property tax was set when initially. It...

Seanad: Local Property Tax: Motion (30 May 2018)

Paddy Burke: That is correct. I hope people will not be criminalised when new legislation is introduced, if it is required after the review has been completed. I propose the amendment to the Fianna Fáil motion, although I have great sympathy for parts of it.I believe most people would agree with a lot of what is in the motion and there are also many aspects of the amendment that Fianna Fáil...

Seanad: Local Property Tax: Motion (30 May 2018)

Paddy Burke: I ask Senator Horkan to consider withdrawing the motion. I hope those who carry out the review will take into account the many issues that have been raised in the House in regard to the local property tax. Later in the year, I hope we will see that the proposals made here today are addressed in that review, and that, as the Minister has said, it will be fair.

Seanad: Local Property Tax: Motion (30 May 2018)

Paddy Burke: It was so we could have a debate on it.

Seanad: National Minimum Wage (Removal of Sub-minimum Rates of Pay) Bill 2017: Second Stage (29 May 2018)

Paddy Burke: I welcome the Minister to the House. I thank Senators Gavan and Ruane for putting forward the Bill because it creates a debate on this issue. I am a former employer of many young people over many years, who were glad to get work near their homes and in their localities and who did not have to emigrate during the summer holidays or at Christmas. The current position is that the lower rate...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Insurance Costs for Community Groups: Discussion (24 May 2018)

Paddy Burke: I will be brief. I welcome all the witnesses to the committee. My first question is for all the witnesses. They may not need to answer it directly, but they can reflect on it. Do they think everyone should have his or her own insurance? Most people who go on holidays go on multiple trips and have multi-trip insurance. Other people get insurance every time they go on holidays. I firmly...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Insurance Costs for Community Groups: Discussion (24 May 2018)

Paddy Burke: Apart from the capital insurance claims because of the storm and one thing and another, are the other claims for people who were injured on GAA grounds?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Insurance Costs for Community Groups: Discussion (24 May 2018)

Paddy Burke: Are these claims for people falling or getting injured bigger than those for injuries on the playing field?
