Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Accessibility of Public Transport for People with Disabilities: Discussion (Resumed) (13 Jun 2018)

Kevin O'Keeffe: With regard to private operator access, I have concerns there. As recently as a month ago, I had parents of a child in a wheelchair whose class went off to Clare on a school trip. The child in the wheelchair could not go because there was no access facilitation for the wheelchair which was annoying.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Accessibility of Public Transport for People with Disabilities: Discussion (Resumed) (13 Jun 2018)

Kevin O'Keeffe: I thank Mr. Delaney. Mr. O'Leary is attacking the local authorities, but the local authorities only provide the planning and the permits if the works need to be done. It is like blaming local authorities if there is a water leak. Just because something is located on public property one blames the county councils. I know where he is coming from and in fairness I was a member of a local...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Accessibility of Public Transport for People with Disabilities: Discussion (Resumed) (13 Jun 2018)

Kevin O'Keeffe: The good news is that hopefully we are making progress in making public and private transport more accessible to people with disabilities. I commend Ms Hill on her initiative and I hope it will spread down south - from my own political background that is how I will put it. Get the word out there; I thank the witnesses and wish them the best of luck.

Other Questions: Health Promotion (12 Jun 2018)

Kevin O'Keeffe: The Minister's Department published a report in 2016 on the national physical activity plan. It is being implemented at the moment on a stage by stage basis. Are we doing enough for the well-being of our children, adults and senior citizens regarding fitness? Can we do more on activity and is the Minister progressing matters on this issue?

Other Questions: Health Promotion (12 Jun 2018)

Kevin O'Keeffe: I welcome the Minister of State's response. I note the contents of the report. As the Minister of State said, only 43% of adults actively participate in sport. How can we increase this percentage? It is important. Almost 60% are still not participating in sports or activities for the sake of fitness. Do we need to give more hours to physical education for our children in our schools?...

Other Questions: Health Promotion (12 Jun 2018)

Kevin O'Keeffe: I thank and compliment the Minister of State, Deputy Griffin, for his work. When we think of obesity, people straightaway refer to the Mars bar and the bag of Tayto. However, much is also down to non-participation in physical activities. Physical education is a good way of getting our youth up to standard in the education system in respect of physical co-ordination and other aspects of...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Business of Joint Committee (30 May 2018)

Kevin O'Keeffe: I remind members to turn off their mobile phones completely because they interfere with the recording equipment. Before we deal with the main business, I will deal with correspondence. No. 2018/281 is an email from Ms M. Daly of the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport requesting a date for the chairperson designate of DAA, Mr. Basil Geoghegan, to appear before the joint committee....

Kevin O'Keeffe: I thank the Minister for his presentation. Senator Feighan is first.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Rural Bus Services: Discussion (30 May 2018)

Kevin O'Keeffe: Before I bring in the other members, I have a few questions. It is, as other speakers have said, a positive initiative. The Minister, Deputy Ross, in his statement said that one of the key features of these services is greater integration with existing public transport services and better linking of services between and within towns and villages. This does not go anywhere near breaking the...
