- Seanad: Health (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2016: Committee and Remaining Stages (7 Feb 2017)
Marie Louise O'Donnell: I know that. My apologies for thinking I was ahead of the Senator. I was not.
- Seanad: Health (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2016: Committee and Remaining Stages (7 Feb 2017)
Marie Louise O'Donnell: I support Senator Swanick's excellent amendment even though it was ruled out of order. Senator Crown spoke about this issue in the last Seanad. Why, on a certain date when one is 65, if one is, as Senator Reilly said, experienced, knowledgeable, resilient, full of health and competence, does one have to give up one's job? It can be ruled out of order all one likes, and it was ruled out of...
- Seanad: Health (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2016: Committee and Remaining Stages (7 Feb 2017)
Marie Louise O'Donnell: It is one of the most relevant amendments here. If one looks at the financial burden or emotional trauma that has happened to people on waiting lists, the cost to the State and the people is unimaginable-----
- Seanad: Health (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2016: Committee and Remaining Stages (7 Feb 2017)
Marie Louise O'Donnell: I really think ruling this amendment out of order is ageist. Some 25% of us are going to be over 65 in 2020. What are we thinking about? It is outrageous. It is one of the best and most creative amendments that has come in here and I would like to know why it was ruled out of order and on what grounds.
- Seanad: Health (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2016: Committee and Remaining Stages (7 Feb 2017)
Marie Louise O'Donnell: That is all very well, but I would like to support the amendment-----
- Seanad: Health (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2016: Committee and Remaining Stages (7 Feb 2017)
Marie Louise O'Donnell: It is excellent. We are insane.
- Seanad: Health (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2016: Committee and Remaining Stages (7 Feb 2017)
Marie Louise O'Donnell: I would just like to support Senator Swanick. He should pursue it against all odds. Perhaps this Seanad could actually bring it about that people do not have to leave their work if they are competent, able or resilient, and with all of that experience, on a certain day when they are 65. I never heard anything as ridiculous if they want to stay.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs: Sustaining Viable Rural Communities: Discussion (Resumed) (1 Feb 2017)
Marie Louise O'Donnell: I will just address Mr. Ray Hernan from Bus Éireann. I was not here for the other presentation. I thank Mr. Hernan for his presentation, which I found very interesting. Why are there no structures within the organisation which offer the best outcomes? He said it does not have them. Why are the structures not in place? Why are unions refusing to talk to Bus Éireann? I...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs: Sustaining Viable Rural Communities: Discussion (Resumed) (1 Feb 2017)
Marie Louise O'Donnell: Deputy Jim Daly made what I thought was a very creative suggestion. I did not think it was laughable or silly, although some members of the public did not subscribe to it. He stated that we could get rid of the debt if every person who got free travel paid €6 per year. I thought it was a very good suggestion. We need creative suggestions when there are problems and chaos.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs: Sustaining Viable Rural Communities: Discussion (Resumed) (1 Feb 2017)
Marie Louise O'Donnell: What does Mr. Hernan think of it as a suggestion?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs: Sustaining Viable Rural Communities: Discussion (Resumed) (1 Feb 2017)
Marie Louise O'Donnell: Why do the unions not communicate? Mr. Hernan is communicating very well with us and we are not at the top of the list.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs: Sustaining Viable Rural Communities: Discussion (Resumed) (1 Feb 2017)
Marie Louise O'Donnell: I cannot ask that question.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs: Sustaining Viable Rural Communities: Discussion (Resumed) (1 Feb 2017)
Marie Louise O'Donnell: That is fair enough, but it is the elephant in the room.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs: Sustaining Viable Rural Communities: Discussion (Resumed) (1 Feb 2017)
Marie Louise O'Donnell: Okay.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs: Sustaining Viable Rural Communities: Discussion (Resumed) (1 Feb 2017)
Marie Louise O'Donnell: I want to say one thing before I go. I acknowledge Mr. Barry Kenny. I have worked with him before and I want to acknowledge his presence and the great work he does. I wish to address Mr. Ray Hernan before I go. He is new to this job and I wish him the best of luck. I have listened to him on radio and television recently and I thought he was extremely articulate both then and today. I...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs: Sustaining Viable Rural Communities: Discussion (Resumed) (1 Feb 2017)
Marie Louise O'Donnell: The Realising our Rural Potential: Action Plan for Rural Development is very good. it is about time we had one. Life does not stop at the Red Cow roundabout. In the plan, the NTA has some very aspirational ideas to conduct a full review of public transport. Could Ms Graham discuss this? The NTA says it will work with rural communities to assess and implement improvements. Is the NTA...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs: Sustaining Viable Rural Communities: Discussion (Resumed) (1 Feb 2017)
Marie Louise O'Donnell: Could Ms Graham tell us about it?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs: Sustaining Viable Rural Communities: Discussion (Resumed) (1 Feb 2017)
Marie Louise O'Donnell: As an addendum to that because I did not really get an answer, if so much is happening and words like "integrative" and "facilitating" are being used, why are we sitting here with problems? We have so many assessments and there is so much awareness.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs: Sustaining Viable Rural Communities: Discussion (Resumed) (1 Feb 2017)
Marie Louise O'Donnell: We just heard from Iarnród Éireann that there are no new lines. I will remember that.
- Seanad: Order of Business (31 Jan 2017)
Marie Louise O'Donnell: I thank the Cathaoirleach and congratulate Mr. Martin Groves on his new post, which I know he will do extraordinarily in every way. I alert the House to something extraordinarily historic and creative that happened in County Mayo this week - Westport House was acquired by the Hughes family. I bring up their name because it is in the public domain. They bought Westport House, one of the...
