Denis O'Donovan: It was not done in the past and that is an important point. I sincerely ask the Leader, and he knows me a long time as I am a long-standing member of the House, that it is important that the referendum is passed. The onus is on the Government side and we should not be lectured to.

I knew him well as a councillor and met him at several ard-fheiseanna. I did not serve with him; he finished his service here in 1989 and I came into the Seanad later that year. As has been said, he was quite a character with a great sense of humour and turn of wit....
