Seanad: Order of Business. (11 Mar 2004)

Brian Hayes: We have all heard of the appalling tragedy in Madrid this morning in which more than 80 people have been killed and many hundreds injured. I am sure I speak on behalf of all here in sending condolences to the Spanish Government and people on this terrible act of terrorism. The Spanish people have had to resist the forces of neo-nationalism, as have we and the British, for the past 30 years....

Seanad: Order of Business. (11 Mar 2004)

Brian Hayes: Hear, hear.

Seanad: Order of Business. (11 Mar 2004)

Brian Hayes: The Government certainly has too much on its plate.

Seanad: Order of Business. (10 Mar 2004)

Brian Hayes: On the issue of titles, he is the Minister for Transport.

Seanad: Order of Business. (10 Mar 2004)

Brian Hayes: I said he was a stroke, and he is.

Seanad: Order of Business. (10 Mar 2004)

Brian Hayes: We have a debate but we want a substantive motion.

Seanad: Order of Business. (10 Mar 2004)

Brian Hayes: Yes.

Seanad: Draft Guidelines on Rural Housing: Statements. (10 Mar 2004)

Brian Hayes: The beginning of the end.

Seanad: Order of Business. (10 Mar 2004)

Brian Hayes: I wish to move an amendment to the Order of Business, that No. 18, motion No. 23, in the name of my colleagues, be taken in conjunction with No. 3 this afternoon. We need an opportunity to pass judgment on one of the greatest strokes of all time pulled in recent weeks by "the stroke Cullen".

Seanad: Order of Business. (10 Mar 2004)

Brian Hayes: Next Thursday, the day after what is traditionally regarded as the official launch of the tourism season, the SIPTU group of unions will hold a 24 hour stoppage affecting Dublin Bus, Bus Éireann and Iarnród Éireann. Does the Leader agree this is an outrageous position in which to put the travelling public and tourists coming into the country? We all know the Minister has handled the...

Seanad: Appointments to Semi-State Bodies: Motion. (10 Mar 2004)

Brian Hayes: There is time yet.

Seanad: Appointments to Semi-State Bodies: Motion. (10 Mar 2004)

Brian Hayes: It is always a joy to follow the former Minister who was responsible for laying rat poison at the Department of Health for the 16 months he was there. Senator Leyden did a good job and caught many rats.

Seanad: Appointments to Semi-State Bodies: Motion. (10 Mar 2004)

Brian Hayes: I support the motion but I do so not as an angel coming down from on high suggesting none of this happened during Fine Gael's time in office, because it did. Such appointments are made regardless of who is in government. The difference is that Fianna Fáil is in government more often than Fine Gael. Self-deprecation is always a good thing when commencing one's contribution.

Seanad: Appointments to Semi-State Bodies: Motion. (10 Mar 2004)

Brian Hayes: It is important we move this debate to a higher plain than that of cat calling on each side. We can all provide examples of where this has happened in the past. What I find reprehensible is the notion that appointments made by a Minister are in some way connected to a person's affiliation to a party. Fine Gael raised the issue of prison visiting committees last year. Despite Senator Minihan's...

Seanad: Appointments to Semi-State Bodies: Motion. (10 Mar 2004)

Brian Hayes: All the letters were sent to former Minister, Deputy O'Donoghue, suggesting appointments on the basis of the person's support for Fianna Fáil at the time. One letter from Minister of State, Deputy Pat the Cope Gallagher, referred to one of "our prison visiting committees", not the State's visiting committees. He suggested the appointment of a particular person based on his having spent a...

Seanad: Appointments to Semi-State Bodies: Motion. (10 Mar 2004)

Brian Hayes: I will give the letters to Senator Minihan.

Seanad: Appointments to Semi-State Bodies: Motion. (10 Mar 2004)

Brian Hayes: The Senator has 25 minutes to produce them.

Seanad: Appointments to Semi-State Bodies: Motion. (10 Mar 2004)

Brian Hayes: We must address the notion that appointments to the semi-State sector are not totally above board. A broadcaster, not far from here, has a very good record in terms of appointing those whose mother or father were prominent broadcasters. The son or daughter turns up as a novice reporter. I could give many other examples of people in semi-State organisations who are particularly good at getting...

Seanad: Appointments to Semi-State Bodies: Motion. (10 Mar 2004)

Brian Hayes: ——which has given jobs to sons and daughters of its well-known columnists. The notion that lifting people into jobs is unique to the political establishment——

Seanad: Appointments to Semi-State Bodies: Motion. (10 Mar 2004)

Brian Hayes: Churchill once said there are 100,000 contradictions in a good man's life and when asked about the life of a bad man, he said, "far too many to count."
