- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Engagement with Chairperson to the Board of RTÉ (19 Apr 2023)
Christopher O'Sullivan: I congratulate Ms Ní Raghallaigh on her new position. I wish her the best of luck with it. I also wish Mr. Kevin Bakhurst the best of luck in his new role. I congratulate Ms Dee Forbes as well, the outgoing director general. She spends a lot of time in Glandore in my constituency. I am sure she will now be spending much more time there, so I expect to see much more of her down...
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Engagement with Chairperson to the Board of RTÉ (19 Apr 2023)
Christopher O'Sullivan: At those meetings, does the board ever discuss the proliferation of repeat shows on RTÉ 1 and RTÉ 2, the two main television stations? I ask this because since the number of repeat programmes on both channels has been pointed out to me, this issue has been driving me mad. There are quite a lot of these repeats. I am thinking of shows like "Killinaskully", as well as "The Late...
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Engagement with Chairperson to the Board of RTÉ (19 Apr 2023)
Christopher O'Sullivan: "Home and Away" was what I grew up on in college. We could not get enough of it. At the same time, though, we are in a changing world and people can record programmes if they want to watch them back. In most instances, they have the devices to record them. There is only so much of one programme we can take. Has the level of repeats on RTÉ 1 and RTÉ 2 been discussed? Surely...
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Engagement with Chairperson to the Board of RTÉ (19 Apr 2023)
Christopher O'Sullivan: There are so many talented programme makers out there.
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Engagement with Chairperson to the Board of RTÉ (19 Apr 2023)
Christopher O'Sullivan: They are making everything from documentaries, to drama and live music and all these different spheres of activity. There are opportunities here to provide new and fresh slots for these programme makers' output, as opposed to repeats. I do take the points made by Dr. Mathews, though. Equally, however, there does seem to be an increased proliferation of these repeats. I appreciate his...
- Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Domestic, Sexual and Gender-based Violence (18 Apr 2023)
Christopher O'Sullivan: This question asks the Minister what plans he has to tackle the increasing levels of reporting of sexual violence against women.
- Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Domestic, Sexual and Gender-based Violence (18 Apr 2023)
Christopher O'Sullivan: I thank the Minister. I appreciate, as he outlined, that much has been done in this area, especially in the past 12 to 18 months. However, we are discussing this issue in a context where the trend is clear. There has been a significant increase in violence against women in recent years. The statistics show that 12 women died violently in 2022, which is the highest number since 2007. I...
- Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Domestic, Sexual and Gender-based Violence (18 Apr 2023)
Christopher O'Sullivan: I will use my remaining time to underline the seriousness of the situation in west Cork. I outlined the statistics earlier. There were 48 cases of sexual assault and rape in 2019, increasing to 70 in 2020 and to 105 in 2021. There is a serious issue there and there is a serious lack of services in the west Cork area. It was mentioned as one of the regions where refuges should be provided...
- Finance Bill 2023: Report Stage (18 Apr 2023)
Christopher O'Sullivan: I welcome the amendment the Minister has made to the benefit-in-kind measure. The Fianna Fáil parliamentary party as a group met with the Minister to explain that while we believe any initiatives to move towards cleaner vehicles, whether electric or hybrid, are welcome, in some cases people would be put very much out of pocket by this measure. I really appreciate that the Minister...
- Finance Bill 2023: Report Stage (18 Apr 2023)
Christopher O'Sullivan: If Deputy Healy-Rae will let me explain, I will convert him. I will do my best and by the time I am finished speaking, Deputy Danny Healy-Rae will be in an EV, charged by offshore renewable energy from the Kerry coast and he will have zero emissions.
- Finance Bill 2023: Report Stage (18 Apr 2023)
Christopher O'Sullivan: EV sales surpassed diesel vehicle sales this week and there is a reason for that. EVs are becoming a more viable alternative. A couple of years ago I would have agreed with Deputy Healy-Rae. The range was not there but the ranges are fantastic now. We are talking now about 400 km and up to 500 km. Even Deputy Healy-Rae and I would not do that much in a day.
- Finance Bill 2023: Report Stage (18 Apr 2023)
Christopher O'Sullivan: The Deputy would have to charge it before he goes home; he is absolutely right but the technology is improving vastly. EVs are fast. I am not sure if the Deputy has ever been in one but they are fast, smooth and comfortable. The Deputy is absolutely right that one is not going to pull a trailer-load of cattle in an EV. They are not ready for that yet-----
- Finance Bill 2023: Report Stage (18 Apr 2023)
Christopher O'Sullivan: We are going to have to allow for that transition. One will not be able to pull a trailer-load of cattle or silage but there is a place for EVs. Their range is improving massively. We all agree we need offshore renewable energy. I have even heard comments from Deputy Healy-Rae in relation to that. When we have offshore renewable energy and we are charging EVs, that is clean transport....
- Post-European Council Meeting: Statements (18 Apr 2023)
Christopher O'Sullivan: I thank the Ceann Comhairle. I was due to share with Deputy Dillon, but I understand he was not able to make it here. I will not speak for the full nine minutes, as he was due to have four or five of these. I can waffle if my colleagues wish but I would prefer to get straight to the point. Was there any discussion at the EU Council meeting on state aid rules and EU funding and how this...
- Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Cancer Services (18 Apr 2023)
Christopher O'Sullivan: I thank the Minister of State for the response but, as he will appreciate, it did not quite answer the question I had. To help in this exercise, he might take note of my comments, and pass on a message to the Minister for Health, regarding my specific question. The then CEO of CHO 4 made an application to the HSE for specific funding for the running of the Cancer Connect service. We were...
- Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Cancer Services (18 Apr 2023)
Christopher O'Sullivan: It is now ten minutes past midnight and here we are. I appreciate the Minister of State taking this matter.
- Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Cancer Services (18 Apr 2023)
Christopher O'Sullivan: Family friendly is right. We have all got homes to go to. I appreciate that the Minister of State is here. I am disappointed that none of the health Ministers is here to listen to my plea. This is the seventh effort I have made to get this matter taken. Now that it is finally being taken and the Minister of State is here to take it, despite the fact it is 12.10 a.m., I have decided that...
- Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Cancer Services (18 Apr 2023)
Christopher O'Sullivan: Exactly. We are into the following day. I appreciate the Minister of State sticking around to take this matter. It relates to Cancer Connect, which is an extraordinary cancer support service in Cork, west Cork and extending into County Kerry. It offers a transport service for people availing of chemotherapy and radiotherapy services in Cork University Hospital, CUH, and Cork city. At the...
- Written Answers — Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport: Fuel Oil Specifications (18 Apr 2023)
Christopher O'Sullivan: 263. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport if there is evidence that changing to E10 fuel can cause damage to pre-2011 cars and motorcycles; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18310/23]
- Written Answers — Department of Housing, Planning, and Local Government: Housing Schemes (18 Apr 2023)
Christopher O'Sullivan: 746. To ask the Minister for Housing, Planning, and Local Government if steps are being taken to increase the staffing budget for local authorities to enable them to react in a timely manner to the increased demand for housing schemes; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
