Clarification of Statements made by the Taoiseach and Ministers: Statements (Resumed) (14 Feb 2017)

Paul Murphy: -----accurate?

Clarification of Statements made by the Taoiseach and Ministers: Statements (Resumed) (14 Feb 2017)

Paul Murphy: Did the Taoiseach engage in a conversation around it and therefore he was fully aware of Tusla's involvement?

Clarification of Statements made by the Taoiseach and Ministers: Statements (Resumed) (14 Feb 2017)

Paul Murphy: Did the Taoiseach say to her that this would be covered by the commission of investigation?

Clarification of Statements made by the Taoiseach and Ministers: Statements (Resumed) (14 Feb 2017)

Paul Murphy: Which time? Was it the first, second or third time?

Leaders' Questions (14 Feb 2017)

Paul Murphy: Will the Taoiseach agree that what has happened here is utterly chilling, namely, a criminal conspiracy led by the hierarchy of the Garda to destroy the lives of gardaí who pose difficulties for them? If they felt able to do that against gardaí, what else are they willing to do to those who they consider to pose a threat to them? Does the Taoiseach agree that it is a fundamental...

Leaders' Questions (14 Feb 2017)

Paul Murphy: -----just as either the Tánaiste and Minister for Justice and Equality, Deputy Fitzgerald, or Deputy O'Callaghan were caught out. Facts are stubborn things. They cannot exist in two different states at the same time. Do I take it from the Taoiseach's response that he does not agree to Maurice McCabe's request that the six questions that have been posed be answered in advance of, or...

Leaders' Questions (14 Feb 2017)

Paul Murphy: We need facts and statements from all of these and we need the ability to question them. Mr. Martin Callinan described what the whistleblowers were doing as "disgusting". That is the word that sums up the actions of the top gardaí in smearing Mr. Maurice McCabe, engaging in a pattern of black propaganda of a similar sort against at least two other gardaí, political policing,...

Leaders' Questions (14 Feb 2017)

Paul Murphy: The Taoiseach mentioned the truth quite a few times. He is well known for having a casual relationship with the truth.

Leaders' Questions (14 Feb 2017)

Paul Murphy: The admission, or mea culpa, made by the Taoiseach a moment ago goes well beyond the man with two pints in his hand, the Army protecting the ATM machines or the people ringing up the Department of the Taoiseach to tell it how great the budget was. It goes well beyond that. Let us quote what the Taoiseach said on "This Week" on Sunday. He said:Minister Zappone, who is doing a very good job,...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Future Funding of Domestic Water Services: Commission for Energy Regulation and Irish Water (14 Feb 2017)

Paul Murphy: The key item we heard from Scottish Water and Welsh Water last week was that it is not necessary to have domestic water meters to find leaks in people's homes, which is the perception that existed. Can the witnesses confirm that is the case and that individual leaks in households can be found through district metering and the mechanisms that exist in sonar technology for finding where the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Future Funding of Domestic Water Services: Commission for Energy Regulation and Irish Water (14 Feb 2017)

Paul Murphy: To follow up on that, there is a suggestion that we will have to introduce excessive usage charges to stop people wasting water. However, it is currently illegal for people to allow water to be wasted or to fail to prevent it from being wasted under the Water Services Act 2007. In fact, councils use that legislation to deal with those who blatantly have a leak on their property but have...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Future Funding of Domestic Water Services: Commission for Energy Regulation and Irish Water (14 Feb 2017)

Paul Murphy: There are currently processes in place, even without an excessive usage charge, to deal with the very top end of the curve to which Mr. Grant refers, in terms of those-----

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Future Funding of Domestic Water Services: Commission for Energy Regulation and Irish Water (14 Feb 2017)

Paul Murphy: In the past some of the councils, South Dublin County Council in particular, invested significant resources in dealing with leaks, both public leaks and those in peoples' homes and that had a significant impact as I understand it. Mr. Grant made the point that the vast majority of water is lost in the mains rather than on private land. The figures in his presentation show that 82% of all...

Written Answers — Department of Education and Skills: School Curriculum (14 Feb 2017)

Paul Murphy: 209. To ask the Minister for Education and Skills his views on the continuation of history in the junior cycle; his further views on the fact that fewer students are studying history; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7221/17]

Questions on Promised Legislation (9 Feb 2017)

Paul Murphy: When does the Tánaiste expect to see the Public Health (Alcohol) Bill 2015 return to the Dáil, particularly in the context of the reported ferocious lobbying by the alcohol and retail industry against the structural separation of sale of alcohol? Will that element remain in the Bill? Does the Tánaiste agree that public health should take priority over profits?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Future Funding of Domestic Water Services: Scottish Water, Welsh Water and the Commission for Energy Regulation (8 Feb 2017)

Paul Murphy: I thank the witnesses for the presentation. The most interesting aspect for me is the use of district metering to spot leaks and so on. My first question is to Mr. Jones because he has a relatively substantial number of meters. On the question of usage, does Mr. Jones have figures for the average usage per household or per adult?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Future Funding of Domestic Water Services: Scottish Water, Welsh Water and the Commission for Energy Regulation (8 Feb 2017)

Paul Murphy: That is useful. Mr. Jones spoke about private capital financing. His organisation gets money from customers but it also borrows money on the international markets. Are any of those loans secured against the assets of Welsh Water?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Future Funding of Domestic Water Services: Scottish Water, Welsh Water and the Commission for Energy Regulation (8 Feb 2017)

Paul Murphy: What is the total share capital of Welsh Water?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Future Funding of Domestic Water Services: Scottish Water, Welsh Water and the Commission for Energy Regulation (8 Feb 2017)

Paul Murphy: That is useful. I have a question for the CER because having come in we would not want to leave him with no questions having been asked. It is about the question of usage. We got a report, which I believe went up on the documents page yesterday, which is beginning to examine the question of excessive usage, which is key from the point of view of the committee. A fundamental starting point...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Future Funding of Domestic Water Services: Scottish Water, Welsh Water and the Commission for Energy Regulation (8 Feb 2017)

Paul Murphy: It is up to date.
