Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform: Mortgage Arrears Resolution Process: (Resumed) Bank of Ireland (10 Apr 2014)

Liam Twomey: The bank could still maximise its commercial mandate and tell the committee that it is making significant write-downs on bad loans. That does not interfere. It is happening out there. What is the big hang-up in telling the committee how much the bank has written off against home mortgages, SMEs, SMEs involved in property and others?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform: Mortgage Arrears Resolution Process: (Resumed) Bank of Ireland (10 Apr 2014)

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform: Mortgage Arrears Resolution Process: (Resumed) Bank of Ireland (10 Apr 2014)

Liam Twomey: Even if it goes to legal - whatever "legal" is because Mr. Boucher has not defined that either - what is the issue in telling us how much was the write-down? Mr. Boucher states it is a commercial matter. I am not asking him for individual cases. I am asking for the overall aspect.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform: Mortgage Arrears Resolution Process: (Resumed) Bank of Ireland (10 Apr 2014)

Liam Twomey: It would be good. It is merely our perception from what we hear from others.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform: Mortgage Arrears Resolution Process: (Resumed) Bank of Ireland (10 Apr 2014)

Liam Twomey: In the presentations made to the committee last week it was interesting that some of the groups dealing with people in mortgage arrears have a concept that the banks are going after individuals with equity in that if they can get equity out of a solution they will go after those people. We have not heard much on this occasion about small and medium enterprises, SMEs, that have significant...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform: Mortgage Arrears Resolution Process: (Resumed) Bank of Ireland (10 Apr 2014)

Liam Twomey: Mr. Boucher is consistent in that he continues to push the bank's policy of no write-downs. Why is Mr. Boucher so intransigent on that issue? What is wrong with saying that the bank is writing down loans? There are a considerable number of borrowers who are in arrears and not co-operating because they feel, because of what they read in the media, that the banks will not give them a fair...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform: Mortgage Arrears Resolution Process: Discussion (2 Apr 2014)

Liam Twomey: I thank the witnesses for attending. It has been a long afternoon but it has been very informative for the committee. I hope they all listen when the banks respond next week. They might offer their critique of what they say because many of the questions we ask them will stem from some of the issues raised here today. The witnesses have given us different points of view and we will...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform: Mortgage Arrears Resolution Process: Discussion (2 Apr 2014)

Liam Twomey: The Deputy put that question to the last group but, unfortunately, some people are inclined to leave impertinent questions to the end, which does not help good time keeping. I ask the witnesses to send their reply to the committee in writing so that it can be forwarded to the Deputy.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform: Mortgage Arrears Resolution Process: Discussion (2 Apr 2014)
