- Seanad: Maternity Protection (Amendment) Bill 2003: Committee Stage. (2 Dec 2003)
Sheila Terry: There is none, but one was promised.
- Seanad: Maternity Protection (Amendment) Bill 2003: Committee Stage. (2 Dec 2003)
Sheila Terry: I move amendment No. 34: In page 10, to delete lines 1 to 5. This proposes to delete lines 1 to 5 on page 10. I spoke about this previously.
- Seanad: Maternity Protection (Amendment) Bill 2003: Committee Stage. (2 Dec 2003)

- Seanad: Maternity Protection (Amendment) Bill 2003: Committee Stage. (2 Dec 2003)
Sheila Terry: I thank the Minister for listening to the previous debate on this Bill and coming forward with changes today. I also fully support Senator Cox in what she has said on many occasions about securing rights for the women of the Houses of the Oireachtas. I ask the Minister to make the necessary changes to make it easier for women to combine child rearing with their work, including breastfeeding....
- Seanad: Order of Business. (24 Nov 2003)
Sheila Terry: I support the construction workers who are picketing the offices of the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform. There is an obligation to provide for workers' pensions. The construction workers are expressing their anger that their employers, the developers, have not been paying the mandatory contributions to their pension schemes. The figure runs to more than â¬30 million. These...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (20 Nov 2003)
Sheila Terry: I too condemn the remarks made by a Member of these Houses this morning. In the same vein, I want to raise the issue of the staff of this House. We all know they work very hard. I refer, in particular, to our secretaries some of whom are very poorly paid. We owe it to them to tackle this issue, particularly those secretaries who have been brought in on the lower pay rate, like the yellow...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (19 Nov 2003)
Sheila Terry: I am concerned over last week's disturbance in Mountjoy Prison, which caused serious upset and distress to many of the prison officers involved. This, along with other prison and prison officer issues, needs to be discussed in the House. I call on the Leader to ask the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform to address these issues here and to outline for us his plans for the prisons...
- Seanad: Stem Cell Research: Statements. (19 Nov 2003)
Sheila Terry: I welcome the Tánaiste to the Seanad. This proposal on embryonic stem cell research did not come to the Oireachtas for scrutiny in the usual way. It was discussed at the Sub-committee on European Scrutiny and was sent to the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Enterprise and Small Business for scrutiny. Both of these committees recommended rejection of the proposal. Will the Tánaiste explain why...
- Seanad: Stem Cell Research: Statements. (19 Nov 2003)
Sheila Terry: Department officials said at the Sub-committee on European Scrutiny hearing that Ireland had indicated it would not oppose the Commission's proposals as currently drafted â having discussed the matter with the Department of Health and Children and other relevant Departments â because the funding of any research activity in Ireland which would not satisfy Irish ethical or legal...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (12 Nov 2003)
Sheila Terry: Yesterday in Dublin west, another man was murdered. This is the 20th murder involving the use of firearms. It now appears a life can be taken at any time. This is one death too many. We have called on the Minister â we have debated this matter many times â to outline to this House how he intends dealing with this problem. All the Minister can say at a time when there is so much crime on...
- Seanad: Courts and Court Officers (Amendment) Bill 2003: Second and Subsequent Stages. (12 Nov 2003)
Sheila Terry: I welcome the Minister. There is nothing contentious in this Bill and I support it as we are being asked to do a simple job. The Minister posed the question of whether we should be providing for more than two judges. While I accept there would be a lack of transparency if the Government were to appoint ten judges without reference to the Oireachtas, the figure of only two judges seems small....
- Seanad: Courts and Court Officers (Amendment) Bill 2003: Second and Subsequent Stages. (12 Nov 2003)
Sheila Terry: I thank the Minister for dealing with this Bill. I also thank him for the length of time he spoke to us. It is always interesting to hear his views. He replied to the debate for at least 35 minutes. That is appreciated by this side of the House. We are here to learn and the Minister has more knowledge than I have. I thank the Minister for giving us his time.
- Seanad: Courts and Court Officers (Amendment) Bill 2003: Second and Subsequent Stages. - National Drugs Strategy: Motion. (12 Nov 2003)
Sheila Terry: I second this important motion. Drug abuse is probably the greatest scourge the country is facing and it is threatening the lives of many of our young people. Either the authorities are not tackling the drug abuse problem adequately or they do not have the resources. One of my colleagues in the Dáil, Deputy Tom Hayes, tabled a question to the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (11 Nov 2003)
Sheila Terry: I support the concerns expressed by a number of Senators about the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform's proposal to close two prisons and other reforms. It is urgent that he comes to the Seanad to outline his proposals and the knock-on effect they will have. It is not long since we had the revolving door system in the prisons, which was abhorred by many people. An additional prison...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (11 Nov 2003)
Sheila Terry: The law is not being implemented. I have told the House on a number of occasions that this type of drinks promotion is taking place in pubs. What has been done about it in the meantime?
- Seanad: Order of Business. (6 Nov 2003)
Sheila Terry: I support the call of Senator Brian Hayes for the Minister for Social and Family Affairs, Deputy Coughlan, to come to the House to outline how she will manage the future pension payments of workers. I agree PRSAs have been an absolute flop. The Government must take heed of what the people have said. They do not trust the PRSAs. They also know that their pensions, to which they have...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (5 Nov 2003)
Sheila Terry: I support the call by many Members yesterday for the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform to come into the House and outline how he will deal with gangland crime. Given that those calls were made yesterday, did the Leader speak to the Minister yesterday and, if so, has she a response for us as to when he might come to the Seanad? While these days we tend to think only of gangland...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (22 Oct 2003)
Sheila Terry: I would like the Leader to raise two issues with the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform. One concerns the inequality that exists in one of our major banks, and probably in other banks, in relation to women reaching positions of higher management. Some 79% of the staff is female, yet very few of these women reach the top positions. I am shocked to hear they do not have an equality...
- Seanad: Criminal Justice (Temporary Release of Prisoners) Bill 2001: Report and Final Stages. (22 Oct 2003)
Sheila Terry: I move amendment No. 1: In page 3, lines 17 to 19, to delete "such person as is specified in the direction (being a person who is serving a sentence of imprisonment)" and substitute the following "a person who is serving a sentence of imprisonment".
