Flood Relief: Statements (29 May 2025)

Louis O'Hara: Flooding has caused significant damage to the properties of and given rise to costs for and anxiety among residents in my constituency of Galway East. I recently met representatives of the Save our Shannon Organisation who represent more than 600 farming families whose livelihoods are severely impacted by summer and winter flooding in the Shannon Callows. Flooding is also causing the...

Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation (29 May 2025)

Louis O'Hara: Lives continue to be lost because of the State's failure to provide adequate mental health care. Each year, more than 50,000 people try to access mental health services for the first time through hospital emergency departments. A petition started by the family of the late Adam Loughnane has received more than 17,000 signatures. It calls for alternatives to emergency departments for people...

Written Answers — Department of Education and Skills: School Transport (29 May 2025)

Louis O'Hara: 347. To ask the Minister for Education and Skills if a child could avail of a school bus service with a closer pickup point to their home (details supplied); and if she will make a statement on the matter. [28499/25]

Committee on Transport: National Transport Authority: Engagement (28 May 2025)

Louis O'Hara: I thank the witnesses for their time today. I want to pick up on rural transport again. It is certainly very positive to see new Local Link services starting up around the place, but when I look at my own constituency, we have serious issues with frequency and capacity of bus services from towns which are essentially commuter towns to Galway city and there are very limited links between...

Committee on Transport: National Transport Authority: Engagement (28 May 2025)

Louis O'Hara: I might come back in as my time is limited. I appreciate the update. It is clear from engagements I have had with the NTA in the past that funding is an issue and it needs to be looked at. How are public service obligations, PSOs, identified, especially when a bus service ends? There are plenty of examples in my constituency, such as the Athenry bus, where the NTA identified a PSO....

Committee on Transport: National Transport Authority: Engagement (28 May 2025)

Louis O'Hara: Is the NTA restricted in that as regards funding?

Committee on Transport: National Transport Authority: Engagement (28 May 2025)

Louis O'Hara: I understand the NTA has a role in the allocation of rail stock. Capacity on rail services is a concern on a lot of the regional routes. I wrote to the NTA about this recently. I raised these issues with Irish Rail, which noted that allocation of additional rail carriages is the responsibility of the NTA. The additional DART+ carriages are coming onto the system and I understand that will...

Committee on Transport: National Transport Authority: Engagement (28 May 2025)

Louis O'Hara: Does the NTA have any timeline for when it expects carriages to become available? I am concerned that in the interim where there are capacity issues on services, nothing will be done about it. There are serious issues with the rail service between my home town, Athenry, and Galway city. There is a serious safety issue on services. Will anything be looked at in that regard in the meantime?

Committee on Transport: National Transport Authority: Engagement (28 May 2025)

Louis O'Hara: It was indicated that the rail timetable review would look at the reallocation of fleet. When is that review going out to consultation and when does the NTA expect the new timetable to be finalised? Will a new draft timetable be put to consultation and, if so, is it available now?

Committee on Transport: National Transport Authority: Engagement (28 May 2025)

Louis O'Hara: When does Mr. Creegan expect the draft timetable to be published?

Committee on Infrastructure and National Development Plan Delivery: Uisce Éireann: Future Work Programme (28 May 2025)

Louis O'Hara: I thank the witnesses for their time. In their opening statement, reference was made to the need for reform and delivery of enabling policy. A recent The Irish Times article outlined that Uisce Éireann had warned the Government of the critical need for a wide range of regulatory and legislative reforms if Uisce Éireann was to meet the immense tasks it faced, including the new...

Committee on Infrastructure and National Development Plan Delivery: Uisce Éireann: Future Work Programme (28 May 2025)

Louis O'Hara: Will Mr. Gleeson give the appendix to this committee?

Committee on Infrastructure and National Development Plan Delivery: Uisce Éireann: Future Work Programme (28 May 2025)

Louis O'Hara: That would be very helpful.

Committee on Infrastructure and National Development Plan Delivery: Uisce Éireann: Future Work Programme (28 May 2025)

Louis O'Hara: That is very important. In my constituency of Galway East we have well over a dozen smaller towns and villages where we cannot have the delivery of new housing because that capacity is not there, in the likes of Ardrahan, Corrofin and Abbeyknockmoy. There has only been an announcement of investment in two villages, namely, Craughwell and Clarinbridge, but we have been told it will be years...

Committee on Infrastructure and National Development Plan Delivery: Uisce Éireann: Future Work Programme (28 May 2025)

Louis O'Hara: To go back to the example in my constituency, just two villages out of well over a dozen are actually getting investment.

Committee on Infrastructure and National Development Plan Delivery: Uisce Éireann: Future Work Programme (28 May 2025)

Louis O'Hara: Mr. Gleeson referred to the €2 billion in annual ring-fenced funding that is needed. As regards the announcement made towards the end of last year about the €1 billion in funding allocated to Uisce Éireann to fund capital spending, will Mr. Gleeson clarify what that was used for? Was it used for capital spending?

Committee on Infrastructure and National Development Plan Delivery: Uisce Éireann: Future Work Programme (28 May 2025)

Louis O'Hara: I have some quick questions on behalf of Deputy Cronin, who had to leave the meeting. We know demand from data centres has expanded exponentially in recent years. The first come, first served basis on which capacity is being divvied out is causing housing projects to be delayed. Is there a similar risk with water supply? If we build new data centres, will this impact on Uisce...
